Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Series Reveals First Look & Details, And Fans Are Already Freaking Out
Mike Flanagan is bringing a new version of Stephen King’s Carrie to the small screen, but the upcoming Prime Video series is not simply a remake of the famous horror story. The filmmaker says the goal was to create something fresh while keeping the heart of King’s original idea.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan explained that adapting Carrie into an eight-episode series came with a unique challenge. The original 1974 novel is a short story that has already been turned into several movies and TV projects, including Brian De Palma’s famous 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek.
“The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie,” Flanagan said, explaining that another direct remake would not make sense after so many previous versions.
The new series will take place in the modern day and follow Carrie White as she enters the world outside her home for the first time. Summer H. Howell will play Carrie, while Samantha Sloyan takes on the role of her mother, Margaret White.
Unlike earlier versions, Flanagan’s Carrie will not be a simple repeat of Spacek’s famous performance. The showrunner described this version of Carrie as more open and curious, rather than someone who is already afraid of the world around her.
“She’s walking into the forest of her teenagehood without any sense of danger and with an innate trust in people and in goodness,” Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly.
The casting process for Carrie was a major search, with more than 1,000 actresses reportedly considered for the role. While Howell shares some physical similarities with Spacek, Flanagan said her performance stood on its own and convinced the team she was the right choice.
Samantha Sloyan’s Margaret White will also receive a different interpretation. In previous versions, Margaret has mostly been shown as a cruel and controlling mother. Flanagan said the new series will explore a more complicated relationship between mother and daughter.
“Our Margaret White is a woman who fiercely loves her daughter and wants to protect her from this world,” Flanagan explained. He added that Margaret’s problem is that she does not know how to protect Carrie in a healthy way.
The series will still include important parts of King’s story, including familiar characters such as Chris Hargensen, Sue Snell, Tommy Ross, Billy, Miss Desjardin, and Principal Grayle. However, Flanagan plans to expand the world around Carrie instead of focusing only on the events leading up to the famous prom night.
One major change will be the deeper exploration of Carrie’s powers. Flanagan said the series will use ideas from King’s book that earlier adaptations did not fully explore, including the possibility of a larger connection between Carrie and other people with similar abilities.
“Something that the De Palma adaptation ignored was Carrie’s place in the larger universe, that she’s part of a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn’t know it,” Flanagan said.

The show will also look beyond Carrie’s personal story by exploring investigations, reports, and other events surrounding her abilities. Each episode will reportedly introduce different stories connected to women discovering their own powers.
For Flanagan, adapting Carrie was always about finding a new reason to revisit the story. While he has worked on several Stephen King adaptations before, he knew this project required a different approach because of the impact previous versions have already had.
The Carrie series is expected to arrive on Prime Video this fall, giving fans a new look at one of Stephen King’s most famous characters while offering a much larger story than audiences have seen before.
