Mindy Kaling returned to the red carpet at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards on Sunday, March 1, making a statement in fashion and nostalgia. The 46-year-old actress and producer turned heads at the Shrine Auditorium in a custom outfit by Yara Shoemaker.

Her look was a modern twist on the classic little black dress. The velvet peplum bodice featured a sheer waist panel, and a transparent knitted maxi skirt with rhinestone accents shimmered under the lights. Kaling finished the look with long black velvet gloves and sleek, straight hair, fitting the night’s theme of reimagining early Hollywood glamour.

This was Kaling’s first in-person Actor Awards appearance in over a decade. She had previously participated as a presenter at the virtual 2021 ceremony in a cobalt blue gown, but her last physical walk down the red carpet was in 2014. It feels amazing to be back on the red carpet, Kaling told reporters, highlighting the mix of excitement and nostalgia she felt.

The night also brought a reunion with her former The Office co-stars Jenna Fischer, Ellie Kemper, and Angela Kinsey. The four women presented the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, which was awarded to the cast of the Apple TV+ comedy The Studio, featuring Kaling’s frequent collaborator Ike Barinholtz.

The actresses joked about the challenges of long network sitcom schedules and shared laughs over their time working together. We survived 22-episode seasons and life events that got written into scripts, Kaling said, referring to the demanding pace of their early work.

While the evening celebrated her past, Kaling’s present projects keep her extremely busy. She is preparing the second season of her Netflix sports comedy Running Point, set to premiere on April 23. The show stars Kate Hudson as a woman navigating professional basketball, with Ray Romano joining the new season.

Kaling also recently wrapped production on a Hulu series called Not Suitable for Work. The show follows ambitious twenty-somethings in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood and features rising stars like Ella Hunt and Avantika. Kaling served as the lead creative force behind the series, handling writing and producing duties.

She remains a strong presence in adult animation as well, with the release of the second season and a special of her Max series, Velma. Kaling has also been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing her journey from breakout writer to a global media figure.

Even with a packed schedule and her role as a mother of two, Kaling’s appearance at the Actor Awards reminded fans and industry peers of her lasting impact. It’s a mix of old memories and new energy, she shared during interviews, reflecting on her career and the joy of returning to the red carpet.
