‘Minecraft 2’ Unveils Title, Release Date & First BTS Footage Sparking Fan Frenzy
Warner Bros. has officially revealed the title of the next Minecraft movie. According to information shared by the studio ahead of producer Michael De Luca’s appearance at the Produced By conference, the sequel will be called A Minecraft Movie: Squared.
The announcement comes more than a year after the first film became a major box office success. Released in 2025, A Minecraft Movie earned close to $1 billion worldwide and attracted a large audience of younger moviegoers. The film’s popularity helped bring many fans of gaming and online content back into theaters.
Along with the title reveal, Warner Bros. also shared the first behind-the-scenes teaser and new cast photos from the upcoming movie. Filming is currently taking place in New Zealand, and production has been underway since May.
Several stars from the first movie are returning for the sequel. Jason Momoa will once again play Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, while Jack Black returns as Steve. Danielle Brooks is back as Dawn, Jennifer Coolidge reprises her role as Marlene, and Matt Berry returns as Herobrine.
The biggest new addition to the cast is Kirsten Dunst, who joins the franchise as Alex, one of the most recognizable characters from the Minecraft universe. Dunst replaces Kate McKinnon and Alice May Connolly, who previously voiced and portrayed the character in the first movie’s post-credits scene.
The sequel has been in development for quite some time. Discussions about making another film reportedly started only days after the release of the first movie in April 2025. The strong box office performance and positive fan response quickly convinced Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment that there was room for another adventure in the Minecraft world.
Director Jared Hess is returning to direct the sequel and has once again worked on the screenplay with writer Chris Galletta. Hess has previously spoken about the endless possibilities offered by the Minecraft universe.
During earlier interviews, Legendary Entertainment’s Chairman of Worldwide Production, Mary Parent, explained why the first film was titled A Minecraft Movie instead of simply Minecraft. She said, “we’re calling it ‘A Minecraft Movie’ because we’re respecting the fact that there’s no one story that drives the game.”
Hess expanded on that idea by saying the movie was “not the official story” and was “just one of a zillion stories.” He also noted that Minecraft offers an almost unlimited number of characters, biomes, and adventures, making it easy to imagine many more stories set in the game’s world.
The sequel went through several working titles before receiving its official name. In the months leading up to the announcement, it was referred to as Another Minecraft Movie, A Minecraft Sequel, and simply A Minecraft Sequel during industry presentations. The final title, A Minecraft Movie: Squared, was officially revealed during a Minecraft Live presentation on May 30, 2026.
Warner Bros. also announced a special contest for fans. Called The Minecraft Movie Build Challenge, the competition gives players the chance to have one of their creations featured in the movie or included in the film’s end credits. The contest is sponsored by Microsoft and is open to participants aged 16 and older.
As part of the promotion, a special Builder Cape will be available through TikTok, Minecraft, and Twitch until June 14. Fans can submit their entries until July 6.
Kirsten Dunst’s involvement in the sequel had been rumored before her casting was officially announced. Earlier in 2026, the actress spoke about her interest in joining the franchise because her children are fans of both Minecraft and the first movie. Her casting was later confirmed in March.

Jason Momoa also revealed earlier this year that filming would begin in late April 2026. Production moved forward as planned, and footage from the set was later shown during Warner Bros. Discovery’s annual upfront presentation. The behind-the-scenes preview offered fans their first glimpse at the sequel’s production.
The first movie helped prove that video game adaptations can be major theatrical events when they connect with fans. Minecraft already had a massive global audience before the film adaptation, and its dedicated fanbase played a major role in the movie’s success. Industry observers have credited the film with attracting younger audiences who are heavily engaged with gaming, streaming platforms, and online content.
Warner Bros. is now hoping to build on that success with A Minecraft Movie: Squared. While story details remain under wraps, the returning cast, familiar characters, and expanded Minecraft universe suggest that fans can expect another large-scale adventure inspired by the popular game.
According to Warner Bros., A Minecraft Movie: Squared is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on July 23.
