Misty Copeland made a stunning return to the spotlight at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, just months after retiring from professional ballet. The 43-year-old star wowed on the red carpet in a custom David Koma outfit, pairing a sharp black blazer with a delicate white tulle tutu detail at the waist and a floor-length white skirt.

She finished the look with over $2 million in diamonds from Jared Jewelers and kept it simple by skipping a necklace, letting the dramatic cut of her top stand out. Copeland’s appearance wasn’t just about fashion.

She took the stage to perform alongside Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq, presenting the Oscar-nominated song I Lied to You from the film Sinners. The performance highlighted her precision and artistry, showing why she became one of the most celebrated ballerinas of her generation.

Entertainment sources noted that her presence emphasized the connection between dance and storytelling in film. The appearance also followed a public debate sparked by Timothée Chalamet, who had suggested interest in ballet and opera was fading.

Copeland addressed the topic during a recent panel in New York, saying, “But I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that’s not ‘popular’ and a part of pop culture as movies are.

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have enduring relevance in culture.” She added, “So all of these mediums have a space, and we shouldn’t be comparing them.” Since retiring in October 2025, Copeland has focused on her advocacy work and her foundation, Misty Copeland Foundation.

Through programs like BE BOLD, she provides free ballet training to children in under-resourced communities, working to make classical dance more diverse and accessible. The film honored during her performance, Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, explores the lives of two brothers in 1930s Mississippi.

It has received 16 Academy Award nominations and critical praise for its bold visuals and creative use of music. The movie’s star, Michael B. Jordan, won acclaim for playing both lead characters, Smoke and Stack, and is now preparing to direct and star in a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.

Meanwhile, Chalamet continues his success with Marty Supreme, in which he plays a table tennis prodigy alongside Gwyneth Paltrow. Copeland’s Oscars appearance reminded audiences why ballet and stage performance remain vital parts of culture, while also celebrating the ongoing impact of film and music.
