‘Moana’ Star Dwayne Johnson Admits He Hoped for an Oscar Nomination for ‘The Smashing Machine’
Dwayne Johnson has spoken openly about a difficult moment in his recent career, revealing that he was dealing with a medical scare while continuing a busy Hollywood schedule. In a new interview with Esquire, Johnson reflected on a time earlier this year when he discovered a lump on one of his testicles during a period filled with major promotional work.
At the time, he was preparing for “Jumanji” press duties at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. According to the interview, Johnson visited a doctor before his trip after noticing the issue. The doctor initially suggested it could be inflammation, but also warned that it might be something more serious and recommended further testing.
Johnson explained that he was told to return the next morning for an ultrasound. This meant he had to continue with a full day of public appearances while carrying the uncertainty of not knowing what the diagnosis might be.
He said, “So I had to live with that for those 24 hours, not knowing — and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches. But! I’m okay.”
Doctors later confirmed that the issue was not cancer but epididymitis, a condition involving inflammation. Johnson said the experience stayed with him and gave him a new perspective on pressure and uncertainty while working in the entertainment industry.
The interview also touched on his recent shift toward more dramatic acting. Johnson starred in the A24 film The Smashing Machine, which earned strong early praise after its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. His performance generated awards conversation, with many critics expecting him to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
However, when the nominations were announced, Johnson was not included. Looking back, he admitted that the recognition meant a great deal to him.
He said, “It would have been incredible to get nominated for an Oscar. I realized very quickly that it’s a rare thing to reach this pinnacle where you’re even having these conversations. And it’s exciting! It would have been amazing. I wish it happened.”
Even so, Johnson said the experience has motivated him rather than discouraged him. He described it as a turning point that has pushed him to focus even more on his work and creative goals.
He said, “It has lit a fire in my spine, which is: Let’s go back to work.”

Beyond acting, Johnson also spoke about how he approaches public life and sensitive topics. He explained that he has decided to step back from political discussions after previously endorsing Joe Biden in 2020. He said the reaction to that decision made him reconsider how he uses his public platform.
He said he now prefers to focus on storytelling and entertainment rather than political debate. Johnson described his work as the central focus of his life and said he wants to keep his attention on creative projects.
At the same time, he showed interest in new technology, particularly artificial intelligence. He said he is open to change as long as it is approached carefully and with understanding.
