Few TV adaptations have the luxury of playing in a sandbox as big as the Monsterverse. ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ has used that space to follow the secretive organization at the center of Legendary’s Godzilla and Kong films across half a century. Now the series appears to be heading for a dramatic reinvention, and the latest ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ season 3 report suggests big changes behind the scenes.

The show was created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction for Apple TV, with Black serving as showrunner. It premiered on November 17, 2023, and returned for a second season on February 27, 2026, with 10 episodes each. The cast includes Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm and Joe Tippett, along with Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell sharing the role of Lee Shaw.

According to Variety, Apple TV and Legendary Television are in talks for a third season, but with some major changes. A person with knowledge of the situation says the season would be helmed by a new showrunner and new writers, and would feature new Titans from the Monsterverse. The studio is reportedly actively looking for someone to lead the season.

It’s important to note that this is not an official renewal. The report describes talks rather than a final decision, and neither Apple nor Legendary has announced anything publicly. Some outlets have framed the story as a greenlight, but the details so far point to a season that is still being shaped.

The proposed changes would mean the departure of the creative team that built the show. Black and Fraction developed the series, and their exit would mark a clean break from the first two seasons. Variety says there is no word yet on whether characters from those seasons would carry over, which leaves the cast’s future uncertain.

The report doesn’t explain what prompted the overhaul. But replacing the entire creative team and introducing new monsters suggests that Apple and Legendary want more than a simple continuation. It could amount to a soft reboot of the series.

Season 2 sent the heroes to Skull Island, where Kong and a new creature known as Titan X clashed in the finale. It ended with a cliffhanger in which Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw tracked a Titan in Thailand, a scene that teased the return of a classic monster. The season earned a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even so, the show has faced questions about its streaming performance. As of September 20, Apple had not given a third season the greenlight, and one analysis described the series as having entered a viewing slump. That context makes the proposed shake-up easier to understand.

The report comes alongside news of an already announced spinoff. An untitled prequel series set during the Cold War will follow a young Lee Shaw, with Wyatt Russell reprising the role and serving as an executive producer. Joby Harold, the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ showrunner and an executive producer on ‘Monarch’, is running that series.

JD Dillard has been tapped to direct the pilot, and Harold has also been tapped to oversee Legendary’s Monsterverse for Apple TV, which would include both new and familiar Titans. That makes the main series a piece of a growing television slate.

Introducing new monsters would give the show fresh creatures to build stories around. Legendary’s Monsterverse has been expanding, with upcoming films including ‘Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’ on the 2027 calendar. A new season could connect to that wider universe in ways the first two did not.

At the same time, fans of the existing characters may worry about losing the human story. The series has been praised for its family mystery and its dual timelines, and a new team could change that balance.

For now, viewers will have to wait for more details. A showrunner has not been named, and no premiere timeline has been shared. If the pattern of earlier seasons holds, a third season could be a long way off.

The talks do show that Apple isn’t done with the Monsterverse. After two seasons of giant monsters and family secrets, the show may be ready to try something different.
