More Xbox Games Are Getting Movies and TV Shows, Says Phil Spencer
Xbox is bringing more of its games to the big screen and television. According to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, the upcoming Minecraft movie is just the beginning. In a recent interview, he confirmed that more movies and shows based on Xbox franchises are on the way.
Spencer said this ahead of the release of the Minecraft movie, which is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025. The film stars Jack Black as Steve, alongside Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
He also talked about how video game adaptations are becoming more popular, with movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog films being huge hits. He said Xbox is still figuring out the best way to bring its games to Hollywood.
“We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves,” Spencer said. “Obviously, we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is you’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.”
Xbox has already experimented with bringing its games to TV. The Halo series debuted on Paramount Plus in 2022, with Pablo Schreiber playing Master Chief. The show ran for two seasons, but after the last episode aired in March 2024, it was canceled in July. It was poorly received by fans, and that’s an understatement.
Meanwhile, the Fallout series on Amazon Prime was a massive success. Premiering in 2024, the show quickly became one of the most popular on the streaming platform. It even received 17 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins.
With Spencer confirming that more adaptations are in the works, fans can expect to see more of their favorite Xbox games turned into movies and TV shows. While some projects may not succeed, Xbox is learning from its past and gaining confidence in bringing its stories to Hollywood.
