That unpredictability is exactly why fans have been anticipating Rebecca Romijn’s return so intensely. Mystique has been absent from live-action Marvel storytelling for well over a decade, and bringing her back into a crossover this massive signals just how seriously the studio is treating its X-Men legacy characters this time around.

Speaking with Collider, Romijn described one particular filming day involving thirty-five cast members as very surreal, reflecting on how strange and exciting it felt reconnecting with old X-Men castmates while also meeting an entirely new generation of Marvel heroes for the first time.

Even the process of physically becoming Mystique again proved to be a demanding one. Romijn has spoken about the lengthy transformation required to bring the character’s iconic, scaled blue design to life on screen, a reminder of just how committed the production has been to honoring the character’s practical, comic-accurate look rather than leaning entirely on digital effects.

Mystique’s history of transforming into other iconic characters has always been one of her most memorable traits throughout the X-Men franchise, previously mimicking figures ranging from fellow mutants to political officials. Choosing to have her impersonate an Avenger specifically for this reveal signals just how directly Marvel wants these two once separate franchises to collide on screen.

That choice also raises the stakes of her return considerably. Rather than simply reappearing as a nostalgic cameo, Mystique is being positioned as an active threat capable of infiltrating and disrupting the newly formed New Avengers from the inside, a far more dangerous role than anything she has played in previous X-Men entries.
