Superman Star Nathan Fillion Just Hinted at One of the Most Powerful Superman Villains Already Existing in James Gunn’s DCU

One of the main actors from DC Studios’ upcoming Superman movie has confirmed that a very strange and well-known villain from the comics will appear in the new DC Universe. James Gunn, who is co-CEO of DC Studios, is set to reveal more of his new live-action world with Superman’s release this summer.

After introducing many unusual characters in his previous DC projects, fans can expect more surprises ahead.

Nathan Fillion, who stars in the Superman film, hinted at some of the new villains in the wider DC Universe. While Fillion’s Green Lantern and the Superman cast will face off against Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, one of the most famous villains in DC, Luthor is actually the more predictable threat. Things will only get stranger and more exciting as the story continues.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fillion talked about a key theme of the movie: a Kryptonian who came to Earth and lived among humans.

He also described James Gunn’s vision for the universe, asking what it would be like if the world was full of “giant monsters, alien beings, [and] interdimensional imps.” Fillion said, “There’s things happening that are reality for this world that we’re about to enter.”

This quote suggests the presence of a classic DC villain named Mr. Mxyzptlk. Known in the comics as a trickster from the Fifth Dimension, Mr. Mxyzptlk has reality-warping powers that he often uses to annoy Superman and cause trouble.

DC Studios is getting ready to release Superman, which is written and directed by James Gunn. The film stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult. It will show Superman in his early days as a hero, starting his rivalry with Lex Luthor and fighting new enemies. Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, July 11, 2025.

This news also confirms that the new DC Universe won’t be as grounded as some fans expected.

James Gunn also recently clarified on his Threads account what he means by “grounded” in relation to the DC Universe. When a fan asked if most stories will take place on Earth, Gunn explained that “grounded” doesn’t mean the stories will only happen on Earth. Instead, it means the stories will have well-developed characters who make believable choices, even if the setting is space or another planet.

So, fans should expect a mix of exciting new worlds and strong character stories in the new DC Universe.
