NBC is bringing a new twist to one of its biggest reality competition hits. The network has officially announced the premiere date for The Traitors: New Blood, the upcoming fifth season of the popular series, and this time the game will look very different.

According to NBC, The Traitors: New Blood will premiere on September 17, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET with a special two-hour opening episode. After the premiere, new episodes will continue airing every Thursday night at the same time on NBC, while episodes will also be available to stream the following day on Peacock.

The biggest change for the new season is the cast. Unlike previous seasons, which featured familiar reality television personalities, New Blood will focus entirely on everyday people. NBC revealed that the season will feature 22 civilian contestants selected from a massive casting search that attracted around 60,000 applicants.

The move marks a new direction for the franchise, giving regular viewers a chance to compete in the intense social strategy game. Previous seasons followed reality stars and celebrities as they battled through challenges, formed alliances, and tried to figure out who among them was secretly working as a Traitor.

The Traitors follows a simple but intense concept. A small group of players is secretly chosen as the “Traitors,” while everyone else becomes a “Faithful.” The Traitors must work together to remove contestants without getting caught, while the Faithful players try to identify and vote out the hidden enemies before the end of the game.

The series is based on the Dutch reality show De Verraders and takes place at the historic Ardross Castle in Scotland. Contestants compete in missions to build a prize fund while dealing with lies, friendships, and betrayals along the way.

Alan Cumming will once again return as host for The Traitors: New Blood. The Scottish actor has become one of the most recognizable parts of the series, bringing his dramatic style and humor to the competition.

The Traitors has become a major success for NBC and Peacock since its debut. The first season premiered on Peacock in January 2023, and the show quickly gained a large fan base. The series was renewed for additional seasons, eventually expanding the franchise through a fifth season and beyond.

Season 3 was especially successful, earning five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program and an award for Cumming’s hosting performance. The season also received recognition for its directing, cinematography, and editing.

The upcoming civilian season will give fans a fresh version of the competition while keeping the same formula of mystery, teamwork, and deception. With thousands of people hoping to join the cast, New Blood could bring a completely different energy to the series.

NBC has already planned for the future of the franchise as well. The network has renewed The Traitors beyond the fifth season, with another celebrity-focused season expected to arrive afterward.

For now, all eyes are on The Traitors: New Blood as a new group of players prepares to enter the castle and attempt to outsmart each other. With new contestants, new strategies, and Alan Cumming returning as host, the next chapter of the reality hit is ready to begin.
