Some reunions are worth waiting a decade for, and fans of the ‘NCIS‘ franchise have been circling this one for weeks. Mark Harmon’s Gibbs and Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo finally shared a scene again, and the hour had plenty of surprises beyond the hugs. This ‘NCIS: Origins’ recap and ending explained breakdown covers what happened and why it matters.

The episode, titled ‘Return of the Mack’, aired Tuesday, October 20, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. It was written by Nichole Millard and directed by James Whitmore Jr., and it ran 2 timelines at once. In 1992, young Gibbs and the team worked a murder with Adam Campbell’s young Ducky, while in the present, a wounded Gibbs went looking for answers.

After being shot in the season premiere, Gibbs heads to NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C., to enlist the help of Tony, now the agency’s director. Woody had reconstructed a fingerprint earlier in the season, but the man’s profile was buried in red tape, and Gibbs needed someone with real access. The two share bourbon, toast the late Leon Vance, and catch up on 10 years of silence.

Tony wants Jimmy to look Gibbs over, but Gibbs refuses since he is supposed to be dead. Gibbs also places a photo of himself, Tony and Ducky on the desk, a nod to the late David McCallum’s character that was not in the script. It’s a small gesture, but it carries real weight.

The final scene moves to the morgue, where Tony does a passable Ducky impression and both men admit how much they miss him. Tony then hands over the file on the man whose fingerprint was found on Gibbs’ neck. He used to work for the CIA, and Tony doubts he was the shooter, believing instead that the real gunman hired him to track Gibbs down in the middle of nowhere.

Then comes the bigger clue. NCIS’ system was hacked a few weeks ago, and the intruder accessed every personnel file from the ’90s. Gibbs recalls his own rule about coincidences, and the implication is clear: the gunman may be hunting more than 1 person.

Showrunner David J. North confirmed the theory in an interview with TV Insider, saying the second target is someone from NIS or NCIS. He also said Gibbs and Tony will not appear together again on ‘NCIS: Origins’ this season, though Tony helped move the mystery forward.

Tony tells Gibbs he can’t do this alone, and Gibbs praises the people in the building and tells Tony he’s proud of him. Tony only calls him “boss” at the very end, a deliberate beat North said he saved for last. Fangirlish described the scene as a growth moment for Tony and noted it sets up a call to Ellie Bishop.

That matters because Bleeding Cool’s preview of the next episode, ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’, says Gibbs returns to a place full of memories and finds he’s not alone. TV Fanatic has also reported that Emily Wickersham’s Bishop is headed to the prequel. It looks like Tony’s push is already paying off.

In the past, the team finds Marine Lance Corporal Marco Diaz on a beach, apparently a cliff fall victim. Ducky quickly rules it a murder, and torture marks and branding suggest something darker. A notebook of women’s names and dollar amounts, plus cash hidden in his barracks, reveals he was working as a gigolo.

Gibbs goes undercover with Ducky coaching him like Cyrano, which ends in a brawl with the jealous husband of a client named Mona. The husband is cleared, and the real killer turns out to be Marco’s girlfriend, Staff Sergeant Combs, who had been jealous of his side job. Marco had been sending money to his mother and sisters.

The hour was packed with humor. Ducky’s mother, Victoria, wandered the crime scene and accidentally found the murder weapon, while Franks finally asked Swanson out, only for her to insist on picking him up. Gibbs and Lala also share a charged moment, but he respects her request for time.

The episode closes with Gibbs and Ducky heading to lunch, as the voiceover calls Ducky the best friend a guy could ask for. North told TV Insider that Ducky won’t appear again this season but will be referenced often.

Who do you think Gibbs' shooter is really targeting in NCIS: Origins?
