‘Neagley’ has landed at 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on its first wave of eleven critic reviews, a solid opening score for a freshman spin-off carrying this much built-in fan expectation. The series follows Maria Sten reprising her role as Frances Neagley, the sharp, no-nonsense former Army colleague of Jack Reacher, now leading her own eight-episode mystery-thriller premiering across the crime, drama, action, mystery, and thriller genres.
The show follows Neagley, a former military investigator who now works as a private investigator in Chicago, as she refuses to accept the official explanation behind a close friend’s suspicious death. Drawing on everything she learned during her time in the Army’s elite special investigations unit, she launches her own investigation, one that pulls her toward a far more dangerous threat than she initially expects.
Unlike the main ‘Reacher’ seasons, which each adapt a specific Lee Child novel, ‘Neagley’ tells an entirely original story rather than pulling from existing source material. Collider’s review of the season described it as a “‘Reacher’-lite” spin-off that’s “officially worth your time,” praising the strength of the ensemble cast while noting the show sometimes plays things a bit too close to its parent series rather than carving out a fully independent identity.
‘Neagley’ released all eight episodes simultaneously, timed deliberately to coincide with the Season 4 finale of ‘Reacher’ airing the same day. Alan Ritchson appears in a guest-starring role reprising Jack Reacher, helping bridge the two shows without pulling focus away from Sten’s performance as the clear lead of her own story.
