Netflix has officially given the green light to its live-action Assassin’s Creed series, after years of waiting. In a press release today, Netflix confirmed that Roberto Patino and David Wiener will lead the project as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Both are known for working on shows like DMZ and Halo.

The new series will focus on the classic battle between Assassins and Templars. According to Netflix, it will follow people fighting to shape the future of humanity. But the creators say the story goes deeper than just action.

In a joint statement, Patino and Wiener said the show is “about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time.”

Netflix has been trying to get this show made since 2020, when they first announced their partnership with Ubisoft. Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s VP of Scripted Series, said, “When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin’s Creed to life in bold new ways.” He added, “Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see just how far that vision has come.”

The road to this live-action series hasn’t been smooth. Several writers and producers have left the project over the past few years.

One of the bigger names to exit was Jeb Stuart, the writer of Die Hard, who left in early 2023, as reported by Collider. But Netflix and Ubisoft stuck with the project, and now Roberto Patino and David Wiener are finally leading it forward.

For longtime Assassin’s Creed fans, this won’t be the first live-action adaptation. Back in 2016, the franchise got a Hollywood movie starring Michael Fassbender. The film didn’t do as well as expected, and Ubisoft has said they learned from that experience.

Right now, there’s not much information on the exact historical setting of the new show, or how closely it will connect to the storylines from the video games. The creators are keeping those details quiet for now. But Netflix did say that this version of Assassin’s Creed will try to capture the feeling of the Brotherhood like never before.

Patino and Wiener described the series as more than just action, saying, “Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith.”

With Netflix and Ubisoft working together again, fans are hoping this live-action Assassin’s Creed series will finally bring the franchise’s world to life in a way that both longtime players and new viewers can enjoy.
