Netflix’s Live-Action ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ Shares New Look at Mystery Inc. Gang on Set
The anticipation surrounding Netflix’s ambitious reimagining of a beloved franchise continues to build as production moves forward. The streaming service has made a significant investment in bringing one of pop culture’s most enduring properties to a new medium, signaling confidence in a vision that departs from decades of animated tradition.
New looks from active production sets often generate considerable fan interest, offering audiences their initial glimpse of how creators are interpreting characters that have been embedded in cultural memory for generations.
The series focuses on four teenagers as they set out to solve a mystery involving a supernatural murder that may have been witnessed by a Great Dane puppy. The upcoming series is a modern reimagining of the beloved group of teens and their very special dog, exploring the terrifying first case that brings Mystery Inc. together for good. This origin story approach distinguishes the project from previous live-action adaptations that focused on established versions of the characters. Principal photography began on April 24, and it will be wrapped up on September 10, at Cinespace Film Studios in Atlanta.
Mckenna Grace was revealed to have been cast in the role of Daphne Blake, with Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones.
Grace had previously voiced a young version of the character in the animated film Scoob! (2020) and its unreleased prequel Scoob!: Holiday Haunt. Her familiarity with the character and the franchise provides continuity even as the project moves into uncharted live-action territory. Paul Walter Hauser was confirmed to portray Scooby’s owner as part of the ensemble cast.
The creative team behind the project includes significant industry talent. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners, head writers, and executive producers, with the series produced by Warner Bros. Television along with Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio.
The eight-part series goes back to the very first case that started it all, set during their final summer at camp when old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.
The series is expected to be released on Netflix, and will consist of eight episodes. Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for the project, though production is well underway on the Atlanta sound stage.
