Netflix’s ‘Minecraft’ Animated Series Isn’t Dead, But the Wait Is About to Get Even Longer
Netflix and Mojang Studios first announced their animated ‘Minecraft‘ series back on May 30, 2024, timed to coincide with the game’s fifteenth anniversary, and the project promised an original story built around new characters rather than a retelling of anything players already knew. Canadian animation studio WildBrain, the team behind ‘Sonic Prime’ and ‘Carmen Sandiego,’ was brought on to handle the CG animation.
Since that initial reveal, updates have been sparse. The last real milestone came at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2025, where Netflix’s Dominique Bazay confirmed the studio was still deep in collaboration with Mojang and unveiled the project’s core creative team, alongside some early concept art and stills. After that, fans were left with what amounted to total silence for well over a year.
That silence eventually curdled into cancellation rumors, the kind that tend to spread quickly whenever a high-profile streaming project goes quiet for too long. Those rumors have now been directly shut down. Both Netflix and Mojang’s Jens Bergensten have confirmed the WildBrain-produced series is still in production, though fans shouldn’t expect it to hit screens anytime soon.
The clearest confirmation came straight from Bergensten himself, Minecraft’s Lead Designer and Creative Director, who took to Bluesky on August 28 to put the speculation to rest. Replying to a fan account asking for a status update, Bergensten wrote simply, “Yes we are still working on it!”
It wasn’t even the first time he’d had to address the rumors. Bergensten had previously responded to a similar inquiry back in June with a comparable confirmation, telling one fan on Bluesky at the time that the Netflix show remained active despite an unrelated mix-up over Minecraft capes that had briefly confused the conversation.
Beyond Bergensten’s own comments, there’s a quieter but equally telling signal that the project hasn’t been shelved. Many of the people attached to the series, including members of its production team, still list their roles on the show as current, which typically wouldn’t be the case if a project had been formally scrapped behind the scenes.
That combination of official denials and ongoing staffing details lines up with how Netflix has historically handled its bigger animated productions. Major original animated series at the streamer often require three to four years of runway between greenlight and release, and ‘Minecraft’ is now sitting right in that window without a firm premiere date attached.
Given that production appears to be continuing on schedule but there’s still no meaningful visual update to share heading into the back half of 2026, the most realistic expectation is that the series won’t actually arrive until 2027 at the earliest, and quite possibly not until 2028. That’s a long runway for a project first teased more than two years ago, but it’s consistent with how these kinds of ambitious CG productions typically come together.
For now, ‘Minecraft’ fans are left with confirmation that the show is real and moving forward, even if the wait for an actual trailer, voice cast announcement, or release window is going to stretch on considerably longer. Whether that patience pays off the way it did for other long-gestating streaming adaptations remains to be seen.
