Netflix’s New Action Hit Is Drawing Constant ‘John Wick’ Comparisons

Netflix has quietly built a habit of finding breakout international action hits, and its latest addition has audiences making immediate comparisons to one of the genre’s biggest franchises.

While theaters spent the past weekend dominated by heavyweights like ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ streaming remained comparatively quiet, giving one action film plenty of room to hold onto its audience and stay among Netflix’s most-watched titles.

That film is ‘The Debt Collector,’ a Thai action-thriller that arrived on the platform on July 23. Directed by Surapong Ploensang, the movie follows a former enforcer who, after being released from prison, learns he’s suffering from a terminal illness and decides to spend his remaining time seeking redemption rather than revenge.

The story centers on Nadech Kugimiya’s character deciding to protect an elderly woman and her granddaughter from local thugs terrorizing them, thugs who happen to work for the same loan shark he once served as an enforcer himself. That decision forces him to confront the very world and the very people he spent years working alongside, setting up a violent reckoning with his own past.

Since its release, comparisons between ‘The Debt Collector’ and the ‘John Wick’ franchise have followed the film everywhere, with critics and outlets alike drawing parallels between its lethal, morally conflicted protagonist and Keanu Reeves’ iconic assassin. That comparison isn’t entirely unearned either, given that the film’s own villain directly references Reeves’ character in one scene, seemingly acknowledging the influence head-on.

That connection to ‘John Wick’ has helped fuel genuine viewership momentum for the film. During its opening week, ‘The Debt Collector’ racked up 7.6 million views globally, landing at number three on Netflix’s Top 10 list for non-English-language movies and helping the film maintain a strong position on the platform’s global charts well into its second week of release.

Critics have generally responded positively, if not overwhelmingly, to the film, with reviews frequently praising its brutal, grounded fight choreography while noting that its story occasionally stretches itself to fill a runtime built around expanding stakes rather than a tighter, more focused revenge plot. Some reviewers have even argued the film’s emotional stakes, built around Kugimiya’s character racing against a terminal diagnosis rather than an eternal vendetta, actually give it more genuine weight than the ‘Wick’ films typically offer.

‘The Debt Collector’ arrives on the heels of two other well-received Asian action films, the Hong Kong-style martial arts film ‘The Furious’ and the wuxia epic ‘Blades of the Guardians,’ suggesting Netflix has been leaning increasingly into this specific genre lane throughout the summer. That pattern points to a deliberate strategy of positioning grounded, hard-hitting Asian action cinema as a genuine draw for global audiences, rather than treating it as a niche category.

With the film continuing to hold strong on Netflix’s charts even weeks after release, and comparisons to ‘John Wick’ continuing to drive conversation around it, ‘The Debt Collector’ looks like it could end up becoming one of the platform’s more memorable action successes of the year.
