Netflix’s New Crime Thriller Retells the Real-Life Manhunt for El Chapo — And It’s Already a Global No. 1

True-crime storytelling has long been one of Netflix’s most reliable genres, but every so often a project comes along that taps into a story audiences already feel like they know. Few criminal figures loom larger in the public imagination than Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, whose decades-long run as one of the world’s most notorious drug traffickers has already inspired multiple scripted series and documentaries.

That familiarity hasn’t stopped Netflix from finding new angles on his story. Rather than retreading the sprawling cartel mythology explored in earlier projects, the streamer’s latest release narrows its focus down to a single, tense encounter that changed everything.

That focus is paying off in a big way. ‘Facing El Chapo,’ released internationally under its original title ‘La Captura,’ has become a massive Netflix hit, dramatizing the true story of the two federal police officers whose routine patrol placed them face-to-face with the world’s most wanted fugitive on the night of his final capture.

The 91-minute Mexican crime thriller, directed by Chava Cartas, tells its story from the perspective of federal officer Arturo Carmona and his partner Héctor Rosales, played by Alfonso Herrera and Noé Hernández. Rather than dramatizing the military raid that set events in motion or diving into the inner workings of the Sinaloa Cartel, the film centers on the split-second decisions the two officers faced once they realized who was sitting in the car they’d pulled over.

The events depicted are rooted in real history. Guzmán escaped through a drainage tunnel system in early January 2016 after a Mexican Navy raid on a safe house sparked a fierce gun battle, and he was ultimately intercepted on a highway outside Los Mochis while attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle. He was arrested without further violence and flown back to Mexico City by Navy helicopter, before being extradited to the United States a year later to face trial.

The film’s director has been clear about how the story blends fact and dramatization. Chava Cartas told El Informador that the movie is built around faithful depictions of specific key points in the true story, with the connective material between those moments fictionalized for the screen.

Herrera, who plays Carmona, has spoken about what drew him to the project in the first place. Speaking about his decision to take the role, Herrera said he simply thought it was a story worth telling, according to comments he made to Excélsior.

The response since release has been striking. According to data from FlixPatrol, ‘Facing El Chapo’ rocketed to the number one spot on Netflix in 71 countries, including the United States, within just a day of its release, outperforming several other high-profile titles currently on the platform.

This isn’t Netflix’s first attempt at telling Guzmán’s story, either. The streamer previously ran the scripted drama ‘El Chapo’ for three seasons starting in 2017, along with the documentary ‘The Day I Met El Chapo’ and the docuseries ‘Drug Lords.’ Whether ‘Facing El Chapo’ earns a lasting place alongside those earlier titles may come down to how audiences respond to its more grounded, procedural approach, especially given how much creative license the film reportedly takes with the real officers’ largely undocumented personal lives.

For a story this well-trodden, finding a fresh angle isn’t easy, but focusing on the ordinary officers thrust into an extraordinary moment seems to have struck a chord with viewers worldwide.
