Netflix’s ‘Twilight: Midnight Sun’ series appears to be moving closer to production, nearly two years after the project was first announced.

A new casting update suggests that the adaptation is entering a more active stage of development, with the team now searching for actors to voice some of the franchise’s most important characters.

The latest information comes from What’s on Netflix, which verified a new casting call connected to the upcoming animated series. The project was first revealed in September 2024 as a collaboration between Netflix and Lionsgate, with the series set to adapt Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Midnight Sun,’ the companion novel that retells the original ‘Twilight’ story from Edward Cullen’s perspective.

According to the new update, the series is reportedly close to receiving a greenlight. While Netflix has not officially announced a production start date, the casting process suggests that progress is being made behind the scenes.

Stephenie Meyer remains attached to the project as an executive producer, helping bring her own story to the animated format. The series is also being led by showrunner Sinead Daly, who is overseeing the development of the adaptation.

The production team includes several familiar names from the ‘Twilight’ franchise. Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett, and Emily Wissink are among the producers and executive producers involved. Fickle Fish Films will handle production, with the project operating under Midnight Sun Productions, Inc.

Lynn Wang has also joined the series as supervising director, while Melissa Kostenbauder is serving as casting director and Jake Warnecke is working as casting associate.

The biggest new detail from the casting information is that the team has started searching for voices behind Jacob Black and Billy Black. The casting call is looking for Native American actors for both roles, with the production specifically searching for performers who can represent the characters’ connection to Quileute culture.

For Jacob Black, the team is looking for an adult actor who can voice the teenage character. The casting description says the role requires a voice that feels “youthful, inviting, and cheerful, exuding a happy-go-lucky demeanor with a husky tone.” The character is described as someone with a strong connection to his family and culture while developing feelings for Bella Swan.

The search for Billy Black focuses on finding an actor who can bring a sense of “kindness and wisdom” to the character. The casting notes describe Billy as a Quileute elder who carries the responsibility of protecting his son and community during growing tensions involving vampires.

Interestingly, the casting call also mentions that previous voice acting experience is not required. The team is open to considering traditional actors rather than only performers with animation experience.

According to the reported production details, work on the animated series could begin as early as August 2026 and continue through May 2027, with Los Angeles listed as the production location.

Because animated projects often require a long development and production process, fans should not expect the series to arrive soon. Based on the reported timeline, ‘Twilight: Midnight Sun’ is unlikely to premiere before late 2027 and could potentially arrive even later.

For now, Netflix and Lionsgate have not revealed who will voice Edward Cullen, Bella Swan, or many of the other major characters. However, this latest casting update suggests that the long-awaited animated return to Forks is finally starting to take shape.
