Netflix’s ‘Unabomber’ Trailer Shows Jacob Tremblay’s Chilling Transformation Into a Harvard Prodigy Turned Domestic Terrorist – Release Date Revealed

Hollywood has revisited the Unabomber story before, from the 2017 miniseries ‘Manhunt: Unabomber’ to 2020’s docuseries ‘Unabomber: In His Own Words,’ but Netflix’s newest take is approaching the infamous case from an entirely different angle. Rather than centering purely on the manhunt itself, this version digs into the psychological origins of how a gifted teenager became one of America’s most notorious domestic terrorists.

That origin story anchors ‘Unabomber,’ director Janus Metz’s true-crime drama tracing Ted Kaczynski’s path from a 16-year-old Harvard prodigy to the man behind a bombing campaign that killed 3 people and injured 23 others over nearly two decades. The film weaves together two timelines, following Kaczynski’s formative years at Harvard alongside the FBI investigation that eventually brought him down.

Netflix has now released the first full trailer for the film, giving audiences their clearest look yet at Jacob Tremblay’s transformation into the young Kaczynski, alongside Russell Crowe as the controversial Harvard psychologist whose experiments shaped his early adulthood. The trailer opens with the shock of a 1994 mail bombing before flashing back to Kaczynski’s beginnings as a mathematics prodigy entering Harvard.

Tremblay plays Kaczynski during his time at Harvard, where he becomes entangled in psychological experiments conducted by Professor Henry Murray, played by Crowe, under the guise of an academic philosophy club. Metz has described the character as someone increasingly disenfranchised by society who ultimately turns to violence as a form of revenge, with the film crosscutting between his radicalization and the FBI’s efforts to capture him decades later.

Tremblay has spoken about his approach to avoiding caricature in the role, explaining that he wanted Kaczynski to feel genuinely human rather than a simplified villain. He drew on his own experience of entering a professional environment at a young age and feeling out of place among older peers, something he said helped him connect to Kaczynski’s early sense of isolation.

Shailene Woodley rounds out the film’s central trio as Joanne Miller, a fictional FBI agent leading the 1990s manhunt who uses Kaczynski’s own manifesto as the key to eventually tracking him down. Annabelle Wallis also stars as Christiana Morgan, Murray’s academic partner and co-director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic where the real-life experiments took place, alongside Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca.

Metz has said he knew immediately that Tremblay was right for the role after seeing his performance in 2025’s ‘Sovereign,’ describing him as a rare talent capable of carrying the weight of Kaczynski’s psychological unraveling. The screenplay comes from Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, both veterans of ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ with Sophie Cassidy producing for 2.0 Entertainment alongside MRC.

‘Unabomber’ arrives as part of a broader wave of true-crime storytelling that continues to dominate streaming platforms, though its dual-timeline structure and focus on Kaczynski’s psychological formation sets it apart from prior adaptations of the same case. With an ensemble this stacked and a director committed to exploring the human complexity behind a notorious historical figure, the film looks poised to spark plenty of conversation once it arrives.
