Animated franchises often go through long gaps before getting new life, especially when studios decide to rebuild them for modern audiences. In recent years, many classic cartoon properties have returned through reboots, streaming projects, and expanded universes that aim to connect old fans with new viewers.

That is now happening again with the Masters of the Universe, as Mattel continues to expand the brand with new animated content tied to its upcoming live-action plans and broader storytelling strategy.

According to The Toy Book magazine and a post shared on X, Mattel has officially confirmed a new animated reboot of the franchise that will be released in June. The project is part of what the company is calling a long-term “MOTU roadmap,” which includes multiple formats and releases across different platforms.

The series is expected to launch on June 10 exclusively on YouTube. This marks another step in the ongoing revival of the franchise, which has remained active in different forms over the years, including recent animated projects released between 2021 and 2024 on Netflix, developed by Kevin Smith.

The new animated reboot is being developed by writer and director Matthew Brown. He recently shared details about the project on Instagram, confirming both his involvement and the release date. He said, “At last, I can speak about what I’ve been working on for the last 6 months: a new animated re-boot of The Masters of the Universe for Mattel. Launches June 10th exclusively on YouTube.”

Early reports and industry speculation suggest the show may follow a short-form format, potentially with multiple episodes released in quick succession. Brown’s LinkedIn listing refers to the project as Masters of the Universe: Tales from Eternia and mentions a planned run of around 20 episodes.

The story direction has not been fully detailed yet, but reports suggest it will likely connect to the wider expansion of the franchise rather than exist as a completely separate storyline. Mattel has been focusing on building a connected universe across different media, including film, animation, and publishing.

Nick Karamanos, Senior Vice President of Entertainment Partnerships at Mattel, spoke to The Toy Book about the company’s plans for the franchise. He said, “For us, it’s about the totality of the property and how we keep it going for kids. That’s a huge part of the plan.”

He also commented on how the upcoming live-action film directed by Travis Knight could help bring renewed attention to the franchise. He said, “My prediction is that the original series is going to be the next retro title to have it’s time in the sun once again.”

The Masters of the Universe has a long history, starting as a toy line and becoming a major animated series in the 1980s. It has been adapted multiple times over the years, including previous animated revivals and streaming projects, but the core characters like He-Man and Skeletor remain central to the brand’s identity.

While details about the new reboot’s plot are still limited, it is expected to support the wider franchise strategy that includes upcoming films, tie-in stories, and expanded universe content. There is also a novel tie-in planned that will explore parts of Eternia connected to the upcoming live-action movie.

For now, the confirmed June release gives fans a clear return date for the animated side of the franchise. With both film and animation projects moving forward, Mattel is clearly positioning Masters of the Universe for a full-scale revival across multiple platforms.
