New Photos of Samara Weaving Before Her First Official Appearance as Emma Frost at D23 Leave Fans in Awe: “Not Even the X-Men Can Pull Me Out From That Room”
Marvel Studios has spent years building anticipation for its mutant team-up, dropping vague hints and coy non-answers about casting long before anyone actually stepped foot in front of a camera. That carefully controlled silence finally broke this summer, unleashing a casting announcement fans had been speculating about for what felt like an eternity.
The wait ended with a bang at D23, where Marvel unveiled its ensemble for the long-gestating ‘X-Men‘ reboot, directed by Jake Schreier. Among the reveals, one casting choice generated an outsized amount of buzz: Samara Weaving stepping into the role of telepathic mutant Emma Frost, a character with deep roots in the comics dating back to 1980’s “The Uncanny X-Men” #129.
Now, ahead of what appears to be her first official public appearance in character, new photos of Weaving have surfaced showing her dressed in a flowing white ensemble, styled with a diamond necklace and soft blonde waves that immediately evoke Emma Frost’s signature all-white aesthetic from the comics. The images arrive as fans anticipate seeing Weaving officially embody the character at an upcoming event.
This isn’t the first time Weaving has leaned into the character’s iconic look, either. Fans have already resurfaced older Instagram photos from October 2024, styled by celebrity stylist Jordan Dorso, that show Weaving dressed head-to-toe in white long before her casting was even announced, fueling playful speculation that she may have been manifesting the role.
Weaving has also been candid about her preparation process since the announcement, sharing social media posts that show her diving directly into the source material. She posted photos of herself reading through various Emma Frost comic runs, including her solo series, “Astonishing X-Men,” and storylines tied to the Krakoan Age-era Hellfire Gala, captioning the post with a playful “Don’t read into it.”
That comment did little to stop fans from speculating about how closely her performance might mirror specific comic storylines, particularly given Emma Frost’s long history with the Hellfire Club. Deadline was first to report Weaving’s casting, noting that director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige worked through an extensive search process before landing on her, with the outlet reporting the Frost role “appeared to elicit the most thorough search among the new cast.”
Weaving joins a stacked ensemble that includes Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver taking on the role of Mister Sinister alter ego Nathaniel Milbury. The film is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about plot details as production ramps up.
For Weaving, the role marks a significant pivot after years spent building her reputation in horror and dark comedy, most notably through her blood-soaked, scream-queen-defining performance in 2019’s ‘Ready or Not.’ Landing a marquee superhero role signals a new chapter for the Australian actress, who also happens to carry some Marvel lineage in her own family tree, given that her uncle Hugo Weaving played the original Red Skull in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’
With Marvel’s mutant era finally taking shape after years of anticipation, Weaving’s embrace of Emma Frost’s aesthetic, both on social media and now in these latest photos, suggests she’s fully leaning into the character ahead of the film’s eventual release. Fans eager for more concrete plot details will likely have to wait until production moves further along, but for now, the growing stream of in-character imagery is more than enough to keep speculation running wild.
