New ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Look Puts Sisterhood Front and Center Ahead of October Release
Jane Austen adaptations have a long track record of turning literary classics into awards-season contenders, and Focus Features knows that formula better than most. The studio’s 2005 take on ‘Pride & Prejudice’ earned four Oscar nominations, and now it’s teaming up once again with Working Title Films for a fresh attempt at one of Austen’s most beloved novels.
That new adaptation has been generating steady buzz since it was first announced, thanks largely to a cast stacked with rising talent and established prestige players alike. Director Georgia Oakley, who won a People’s Choice Award at Venice for her feature debut ‘Blue Jean,’ takes the helm this time, working from a screenplay adapted by author Diana Reid.
The film’s new poster has now arrived, and it leans heavily into the emotional core of the story rather than its romantic subplots. ‘Sense and Sensibility‘ stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and the newly released artwork features the pair lying close together, framed by the tagline “No one knows your heart like a sister.” The poster confirms the film’s U.S. theatrical release date of Oct. 16.
That release timeline has shifted somewhat since the project was first dated. Focus Features initially set the film for a Sept. 11 domestic debut before later confirming an Oct. 16 U.S. release alongside a Sept. 25 U.K. opening, positioning ‘Sense and Sensibility’ squarely within the fall awards conversation.
The story follows the Dashwood sisters and their widowed mother, played by Caitríona Balfe, after they’re forced to leave their family estate and confront both financial hardship and the complicated marriage market of Georgian-era England. Elinor’s measured, practical nature and Marianne’s more passionate, emotionally driven worldview form the central tension of Austen’s original novel, and the poster’s intimate framing suggests Oakley’s adaptation intends to keep that sisterly bond at the emotional heart of the film.
The supporting cast rounds out with George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as young sister Margaret Dashwood, and Fiona Shaw as the meddling Mrs. Jennings. That ensemble blends newer faces alongside more established names, giving the production a mix of fresh energy and seasoned prestige-drama credibility.
Behind the camera, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner produce through Working Title, the banner responsible for several previous Austen adaptations, including 2005’s ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and 2020’s ‘Emma.’ Given how strongly those past collaborations performed both critically and commercially, expectations for this new ‘Sense and Sensibility’ have remained high throughout its promotional rollout.
Edgar-Jones herself brings a strong box office track record into the project, coming off 2024’s ‘Twisters,’ which grossed $372 million worldwide, and 2022’s ‘Where the Crawdads Sing,’ which earned $144 million against a modest $24 million budget. That commercial pedigree, paired with Oakley’s acclaimed directorial voice, positions this adaptation as one of the more closely watched literary releases of the fall season.
With the poster now setting the emotional tone and the October release date locked in, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ appears to be positioning itself as a genuine awards contender rather than just another period piece retread.
