Marvel’s marketing team has turned Sadie Sink’s mystery role into one of the most successful guessing games the studio has ever run, and fans are not letting up with just days left before release. Every new frame of footage gets picked apart within minutes, with theories multiplying faster than Marvel can keep up with denying them.

That obsessive scrutiny reached a new level this week as fans zeroed in on a specific moment buried within the film’s marketing materials. A clip circulating online shows Sink’s still unnamed character being captured with apparently zero resistance in what looks like a public park setting, immediately reigniting speculation about exactly who she is playing and what kind of threat she poses within the story.

That capture scene lines up closely with earlier trailer footage that fans and outlets alike have already dissected extensively. At roughly the 1:42 mark of the film’s trailer, a figure believed to be Sink’s character appears strapped to a chair inside what looks like a holding facility run by the Department of Damage Control, the MCU’s in universe agency tasked with managing superhuman threats and cleanup operations.

That connection to the Department of Damage Control has fueled the dominant fan theory that Sink is playing Jean Grey, the iconic X-Men character known for her powerful telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Given that Wonder Man previously confirmed the Department of Damage Control is being positioned as an anti mutant organization within the MCU’s broader Mutant Saga, a mutant character being detained by the agency would track narratively with everything Marvel has built so far.

Adding to that theory, a newer clip released this week shows Sink’s character using what appears to be mind control abilities from a distance, further supporting the idea that she possesses telepathic powers consistent with Jean Grey’s comic book history. The clip carries the caption New clip of Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, though Marvel has still not officially confirmed the character’s identity in any capacity.

Sink herself has continued dodging the question at every opportunity throughout the promotional rollout. In a playful Instagram video, she offered fans three so called confirmed answers about her character, joking that she is not Spider-Man and not Aunt May, while confirming only that she is definitely in the film, leaving her actual identity a mystery she insists audiences will have to discover in theaters.

Tom Holland has also weighed in on just how close some fan theories have gotten. He told Vanity Fair France that some of the wildest fan theories circulating online are weirdly accurate to what actually happens in the movie, while stressing that his lips remain sealed until the film’s release.

That kind of teasing has only intensified fan efforts to piece together every scrap of leaked footage and set photo circulating online. Between the DODC detainment scene, the mind control abilities shown in recent clips, and Sink’s own carefully worded non-answers, the theorizing shows no signs of slowing down as release day approaches.
