New ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ BTS Photos Give Fans a Closer Look at Whitney Peak, McKenna Grace & Elle Fanning

Panem’s dystopian world has never shied away from tragedy, but the franchise’s upcoming prequel is digging into some of its bleakest history yet. ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘ is pulling fans back to the arena for a story that predates everything Katniss Everdeen eventually fights to change, and the buzz around it has only been building as the release date closes in.

The film centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Australian actor Joseph Zada, twenty-four years before the events of the original ‘Hunger Games’ trilogy. Rather than the hardened, whiskey-soaked mentor fans remember from Katniss’s Games, this version follows Haymitch as a 16-year-old tribute forced into the 50th annual Hunger Games, which also doubles as Panem’s brutal Second Quarter Quell.

New behind-the-scenes photos of stars Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace and Elle Fanning have been circulating ahead of the film’s release, offering fans a closer, more candid look at the cast in character away from the polished marketing stills that have dominated the promotional rollout so far.

The images follow a wave of exclusive Entertainment Weekly cover portraits that gave audiences their first extended glimpse at how each actor is embodying their respective role.

Peak stars as Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s love interest and a descendant of the covey, the same group tied to Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird from ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’. Reflecting on the significance of the story, Peak described the film as a pivotal turning point for the franchise’s larger rebellion storyline, calling it “kind of the first domino” in comments made to Entertainment Weekly for the outlet’s cover story.

The stakes of this particular Games are especially severe. Because the 50th Hunger Games marks the Second Quarter Quell, the Capitol decreed that each district must send twice the usual number of tributes into the arena, pitting 48 children against one another instead of the standard 24. That doubled tribute pool puts Grace’s character, Maysilee Donner, directly in the arena alongside Haymitch as one of the District 12 competitors fighting for survival.

Elle Fanning rounds out the trio featured in the new images, stepping into the role of a younger Effie Trinket, the character originated by Elizabeth Banks across the first four films. The ensemble surrounding them is stacked with major names, including Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Ralph Fiennes as a younger President Snow, and Kieran Culkin taking on the role of Caesar Flickerman.

Francis Lawrence, who has directed every ‘Hunger Games’ film since ‘Catching Fire’, returns behind the camera for this installment, working from a screenplay by Billy Ray based on Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name. The book itself became a massive commercial success ahead of the film’s production, selling 1.5 million copies across several English-speaking markets in its first week alone.

With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ set to hit theaters on November 20, anticipation continues to build as more cast imagery and details roll out in the lead-up to release. Between the doubled tribute pool, the emotional weight of watching Haymitch’s transformation begin, and an ensemble cast this stacked, the film is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most ambitious entries yet.
