We all know James Gunn has been actively developing the upcoming Superman reboot, officially titled Superman: Legacy, for several months now, and with his work at Marvel Studios done after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn is now putting all of his focus on his next project.

THR’s recent report revealed the potential candidates for the roles of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, as the casting process is in full motion, and the official cast is expected to be revealed this Summer. The report mentioned Nicholas Hoult, the star of Fox’s X-Men franchise and George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, as one of the potential candidates for Lex Luthor, but now, another report from a different source counteracts that claim.

Nicholas Hoult is reportedly running for the role in Superman: Legacy, but not for Lex Luthor!

According to Deadline and The Wrap, Nicholas Hoult is indeed one of the candidates for a role in Superman: Legacy, but unlike THR’s report, which claimed that Hoult is a potential candidate for Lex Luthor, Deadline and The Wrap report that Hoult is actually running for the role of Superman, along with David Corenswet, Jacob Elordi, and Andrew Richardson, who are also in the mix for the titular role.

James Gunn didn’t want to comment on these reports, although he confirmed on Twitter that only one person had been officially cast for the movie so far, and he highlighted that that first official cast member wouldn’t play any of the major roles. Gunn previously confirmed that at least one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 actors would have a part in Superman: Legacy, but he declined to say which one.

The auditioning process is currently in full motion. It’s unknown when the official cast will be revealed, but it is expected to be during this Summer, presumably at one of the fan conventions. San Diego Comic-Con, which takes place in late July, seems like the most likely option for James Gunn to come on stage and reveal the official cast to the fans at Hall H and worldwide.

Superman: Legacy will be the first movie set in DCU, which James Gunn is developing with Peter Safran. Gunn is officially writing and directing the movie. He turned in the screenplay’s first draft earlier this month before the WGA strike, which means the movie’s development won’t be affected by it, and Gunn confirmed that filming is set to begin in January 2024.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman: Legacy is set to be released on July 11, 2025.
