Nicolas Cage’s ‘Madden’ Skips Theaters and Heads Straight to Streaming, Here’s When You Can Watch
Nicolas Cage’s upcoming sports drama ‘Madden’ is taking a different path than many expected. Instead of receiving a full nationwide theatrical release, David O. Russell’s film will mainly arrive through streaming, giving Prime Video subscribers the chance to watch the story of football legend John Madden from home later this year.
According to Variety, Amazon MGM has set ‘Madden’ to premiere on Prime Video on November 18. The movie is still expected to receive a limited theatrical run earlier in November so it can qualify for awards consideration, but it will not receive a major wide release in cinemas.
The decision is a surprising one considering the talent involved. The movie is directed by David O. Russell, the filmmaker behind award-winning films like ‘The Fighter’, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, and ‘American Hustle’. It also stars Nicolas Cage as John Madden, one of the most recognizable figures in football history, alongside Christian Bale, Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney, Sienna Miller, and Shane Gillis.
The film focuses on Madden’s journey both on and off the football field. Before becoming a household name as a broadcaster, Madden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders during the 1970s, leading the team to its first Super Bowl victory. After retiring from coaching in 1979, he became one of the most famous voices in sports television, spending decades as an NFL commentator.
‘Madden’ will also explore the personal side of his life, including his friendship with Raiders owner Al Davis, played by Christian Bale, and his relationship with his wife Virginia Madden, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn. The movie also covers Madden’s role in creating the Madden NFL video game series, which turned his name into a worldwide brand beyond football.
When the project was first announced in 2024, Russell described the film as a celebration of Madden’s personality and impact. The director said the movie would focus on “the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”
While the streaming release gives Prime Video a major title for its fall lineup, the decision to avoid a full theatrical release has raised questions. With Russell’s reputation as an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and Cage leading the cast, some expected Amazon MGM to position the movie as a major awards-season contender in theaters.
The move also comes after Russell’s previous film, ‘Amsterdam’, struggled at the box office. The 2022 historical comedy-drama featured a major cast including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, but it earned only around $31 million worldwide against a reported $80 million budget.
Russell’s career has also been followed by controversy over reports of difficult behavior on past productions, which has affected how some audiences and industry figures view his work. However, ‘Madden’ represents a chance for the director to return with a more personal story centered on a beloved American sports figure.
For now, fans will have to wait until November to see whether Nicolas Cage’s performance as John Madden becomes one of the highlights of the fall movie season. While it may not get the traditional big-screen launch many expected, the film still has the potential to attract attention thanks to its famous subject, strong cast, and Prime Video release.
