‘North of North’ Season 1 Recap: Everything That Happened in Ice Cove
The contemporary television landscape often retreats to predictable metropolitan centers, leaving remote and culturally distinct communities on the narrative periphery. In recent years, streaming platforms have gradually begun diversifying their storytelling by highlighting Indigenous-led comedies that reject bleak tropes in favor of everyday joy. That shift reached an exhilarating milestone with ‘North of North‘, an Arctic workplace comedy that captured global attention with its grounded warmth.
Developed as Netflix’s first Canadian original scripted comedy alongside CBC and APTN, the production represents a collaborative triumph for creators Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril. Shot on location in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the half-hour series struck an immediate chord, entering the global top 10 charts in 33 countries and winning nine Canadian Screen Awards. Before returning to the frozen north, audiences need a complete refresher on the emotional, hilarious chaos that defined the inaugural season.
At the heart of the show is Siaja Kudlak, brought to life with vibrant charm by Inuk actor Anna Lambe. Siaja personifies a young woman caught between small-town expectations and her deep desire for self-determination. “I think from the moment that I read the scripts, the authenticity was front and center. I read it, and being from the North, I was like, ‘Yup, that’s real,'” Lambe reflected in an interview on The Nerds of Color YouTube channel.
The Polar Plunge and Siaja’s Spontaneous Breakup
The eight-episode season opens with Siaja feeling trapped in her marriage to Ting, the local golden boy. When Ting dismisses her career ambitions and insists on having another child, their strained dynamic reaches a breaking point during a hunting expedition. After falling into the icy sea, Siaja is met with Ting’s embarrassment rather than concern, sparking an unexpected personal epiphany.
During Ice Cove’s annual spring festival, Siaja boldly implodes her domestic routine by announcing an abrupt public split from Ting. She relocates to a tiny storage room in the home of her mother, Neevee, with her six-year-old daughter, Bun. That same drunken evening, Siaja shares a messy, impulsive kiss outside the bar with an unfamiliar visitor.
Paternity Surprises and Finding Independence
That handsome newcomer is Alistair, a southern research scientist visiting Ice Cove with his assistant, Kuuk, to evaluate the town for a proposed polar research facility. Mortification turns to shock when Neevee recognizes him and admits a life-altering truth: Alistair is Siaja’s biological father. Rather than retreating south, Alistair stays in town, determined to forge a genuine fatherly connection.
Seeking a livelihood of her own, Siaja lands a position at the community centre under her quirky supervisor, Helen. She channels her restless energy into community organizing, aiming to turn the hub into a welcoming home for youth and elders. Siaja also advocates fiercely to bring Alistair’s research post to Ice Cove to stimulate local jobs.
Simmering Romances and Arctic Rivalries
Amid her professional awakening, sparks fly between Siaja and Alistair’s Ottawa-raised assistant, Kuuk. Kuuk, nursing personal anxieties after dropping out of law school, quickly finds kinship in Siaja’s authentic spirit. Their growing closeness rouses intense jealousy from Ting, who tries to reclaim his alpha status during a heated match of “Walrus Dick Baseball” against a rival community.

Siaja brushes off Ting’s posturing, but her romantic journey faces a swift roadblock. Just as she gathers the courage to kiss Kuuk at the local pub, his fashionable southern girlfriend, Alexis, unexpectedly arrives from Ottawa. The surprise entrance instantly derails their budding connection, leaving Siaja once again navigating complicated romantic limbo.
Secrets Revealed in the Season Finale
The emotional finale, titled “Bad Influences,” resolves several key conflicts while cementing Siaja’s new path. Although Ice Cove loses the primary polar headquarters bid, Siaja’s impassioned advocacy secures a satellite research office, earning her a promotion from Helen. The victory proves to Siaja and her neighbors that her bold decisions can bring positive community change.
Family tensions also reach a breakthrough when Neevee finally confesses why she kept Alistair in the dark. She reveals that she lost a previous child at age 16 when the father took the baby away, fueling decades of protective fear. Reconciling their painful history allows Neevee to soften, prompting Alistair to remain in town as an active grandfather.
“One of my favourite things about Siaja is this kind of never-ending optimism for life,” Lambe explained in an interview with The GATE, noting how resilient optimism guides her character forward. Having survived emotional blizzards and small-town gossip, Siaja stands prepared to embrace the next phase of her Arctic journey.
