‘Obsession’ Just Crashed Into the Top 5 Highest-Grossing Horror Movies Ever

Every so often, a low-budget genre film comes out of nowhere and rewrites what people thought was possible at the box office, and Focus Features’ ‘Obsession‘ has spent the past several months doing exactly that. Director Curry Barker’s psychological horror film, centered on a young man’s dangerous fixation after a supernatural wish goes wrong, debuted in May with modest expectations attached to its microscopic budget.

Those expectations were quickly blown apart. By mid-August, the film had already crossed $500 million worldwide, becoming the first original film released in the 2020s to reach that milestone and surpassing Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ as the highest-grossing original movie of the post-pandemic era.

That momentum has continued building even further. ‘Obsession’ is now sitting at approximately $506 million at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Forecast, a total that has officially pushed the film into the top five highest-grossing horror movies of all time. It now sits behind only ‘It’ at $720 million, ‘The Sixth Sense’ at $673 million, ‘I Am Legend’ at $586 million, and ‘World War Z’ at $540 million.

What makes that ranking especially remarkable is the film’s production budget. ‘Obsession’ was reportedly made for just $750,000, meaning it has now generated well over 600 times its original cost, a return on investment that virtually no studio release in recent memory can match.

The film’s climb up the all-time chart has been a steady one rather than a single big splash. It first overtook William Friedkin’s 1973 classic ‘The Exorcist’ and its $430.8 million unadjusted lifetime gross, a record that had stood untouched for more than five decades, before continuing to add tens of millions more even after its theatrical run had technically ended and the film moved to digital and streaming platforms.

That staying power has been unusual in its own right. ‘Obsession’ reportedly became the only genre film in history to remain in the domestic box office top ten for more than forty consecutive days, a run that helped it become the first film with a sub-million-dollar budget to earn over $200 million this century.

Focus Features acquired the film for roughly $14 million after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the highest-grossing festival acquisition in history on top of everything else it has accomplished. That acquisition price now looks almost quaint next to a worldwide total that has grown to more than thirty times what the studio originally paid for it.

International audiences have played a significant role in sustaining the film’s momentum well past its domestic run. By the end of its U.S. theatrical release, ‘Obsession’ had earned $263.4 million domestically alongside $238.1 million overseas, with additional markets, including South Korea, still contributing to the total even now.

With ‘Obsession’ continuing to add to its haul and forecasts suggesting a possible finish north of $510 million, the film’s place among horror’s biggest commercial successes appears far from settled. How much higher can a $750,000 movie actually climb up that list?
