‘Office Romance’ Star Jennifer Lopez Sparks Backlash Over “Diva Behavior” With an Umbrella at Paris Fashion Week

Jennifer Lopez knows how to make a front-row entrance, and Paris Fashion Week gave her another stage for it. She has a history with Paris shows, including a long camel dress that looked like a reimagined trench coat at a Dior Haute Couture presentation. This time the star of the evening was the weather as much as the wardrobe.

The occasion was the Stella McCartney show on September 30, where the 57-year-old singer and actor sat front row. The label’s spring presentation was an ode to water, and the en plein air show had an “under the sea” theme. Rain arrived after weeks of unusually parched weather in Paris, which meant guests were about to get a lot more of the theme than they planned for.

Lopez looked visibly annoyed on Wednesday after organizers asked her to close her umbrella in the middle of the downpour. The singer and actress was seated in the front row, and the organizers’ request meant she had to watch the rest of the show outdoors in the rain.

The trouble started on arrival, the report says. Her seat was wet, so she stood to one side while a bodyguard wiped down the chair. After she sat, she first ignored the request to close the umbrella, which a guest behind her had passed to her.

When the request came, Lopez reportedly said a brief “Oh” and carried on tapping at her phone while her bodyguard held cover over her. After it was repeated, Index Magazin says, she handed the umbrella to a staff member with visible displeasure.

Wire coverage of the evening framed things a little differently. The AP’s account of the show described Lopez under an umbrella in the front row, which fits with how heavy the rain was even if it doesn’t capture the back and forth.

Whatever the umbrella saga, the outfit held up. Lopez arrived in a faux-fur shawl over McCartney’s layered Sable midi dress, topped with a black veil. The look came from the Stella McCartney AW26 collection, and the photo accompanying Index’s report shows the brown fur wrap and dotted veil in full.

The faux fur was a fitting choice, given that McCartney leads a label that has never used leather, fur or feathers. Lopez had company in the front row, too. Juliette Binoche sat near Lopez, and Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Kerr and Kat Graham were among the other guests photographed.

Binoche, who is friends with McCartney through their shared advocacy, kept her take on the collection modest. She told WWD after the show that “I’m not a great analyst, I just know that I love what she does.”

The collection itself carried a message. McCartney declared war on the fishing industry, 25 years into her label, on a runway set in the British ambassador’s gardens. Her case began with vocabulary: the same animals are called “sea life” when people marvel at them and “seafood” when they order them.

She also pointed to what the nets bring up. For one piece of fish on a plate, she said, nets haul in dolphins and octopuses, and most of the catch goes back over the side dead. The runway echoed the cause with dolphins on T-shirts, as AP’s headline noted.

The clothes made the argument more softly. The palette ran through seafoam, sage, coral, blush and chocolate, while tailoring schooled under Savile Row’s Edward Sexton loosened until it moved like water. Drawstrings threaded through oversized blazers borrowed a rain-jacket trick for office clothes, a detail that suited the soggy evening. Models walked to PJ Harvey’s “Down by the Water” through the greenery, with Karlie Kloss and Miranda Kerr on the runway in wave-themed looks.

Beyond the runway, McCartney has been busy. A week before the show, she co-founded The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition with Amazon and the forest nonprofit Canopy, pooling the orders of more than 60 companies. At the end of the show, she appeared in jeans, a white T-shirt and her signature baggy blazer, gave the audience a thumbs-up and a thank-you, then disappeared backstage.

The rain even behaved eventually, since it cleared just in time for models including Karlie Kloss and Amber Valletta to take to the runway. For Lopez, that was probably cold comfort after her time in the open air.

Should Jennifer Lopez have been allowed to keep her umbrella?
