‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ Teaser Is Already Out-Viewing the Biggest Anime Movie of the Year

Anime movies have officially entered a new era of box office ambition, and the fandom reaction to prove it keeps arriving faster than anyone expected. Just months after ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle‘ rewrote the record books for anime cinema, the genre’s biggest franchises are scrambling to follow that same canon-adaptation playbook, and audiences are already showing up in a big way.

That shift became impossible to ignore this past weekend when Toei Animation used the One Piece Day 2026 convention to drop a genuinely historic announcement. For the first time in the franchise’s history, ‘One Piece’ is getting a canon theatrical film, adapting the long-awaited God Valley Incident flashback that recently played out in Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

Now, the numbers behind that announcement are turning heads just as much as the reveal itself. The newly released teaser for ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ has already crossed 21.8 million views on X, officially surpassing the 21.4 million views previously reached by the trailer for ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle.’ For a teaser that reportedly doesn’t even include any actual animated footage yet, that’s a remarkable show of fan enthusiasm before production has properly begun.

That comparison matters given just how massive ‘Infinity Castle’ turned out to be. Released on a budget of roughly $20 million, the film went on to earn approximately $737 million worldwide, becoming both the highest-grossing anime film and the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released at the global box office, while also becoming the first animated film of any kind to cross $100 million domestically in North America.

‘Infinity Castle’s’ success established a commercial mechanism the rest of the industry has clearly taken notice of: narrative urgency. Because the film adapted the true final arc of the ‘Demon Slayer’ manga rather than a standalone side story, fans who wanted to know what happened next in the actual story had no choice but to head to theaters rather than wait for a streaming release. ‘Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc’ followed that same canon-adaptation model in 2025 with comparable results.

‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ now appears to be following that exact same strategy, becoming the franchise’s first canonical theatrical release in twenty-six years. The film adapts the God Valley Incident, a legendary battle that took place roughly thirty-eight years before the series’ current timeline, involving a massive confrontation between the Roger Pirates and the Rocks Pirates that has long been considered one of the most pivotal moments in ‘One Piece’ lore.

The announcement also confirmed a second film, subtitled ‘Baad,’ set for release sometime in 2029, suggesting Toei Animation may be positioning the franchise for a bigger theatrical presence as the story approaches its final stretch. ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ itself is currently set for a summer 2027 release in Japan, though details about its director, animation staff, and full cast have yet to be announced.

Given that the official teaser reportedly consists only of a title reveal without any finished animation, the sheer scale of its viewership numbers says a lot about where fan appetite currently sits. If this level of engagement holds once actual footage starts rolling out, ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ could realistically be shaping up to become one of the most anticipated anime theatrical releases in recent memory.
