A Little History

The origin of Spider-Man 2099 is pretty straightforward.

Spider-Man 2099 was created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi. He first appeared in full inside the pages of Spider-Man 2099 #1 back in November of 1992.

Miguel O’Hara was raised in an alternate dimension to the normal Earth-616. In this dimension, the year was 2099 and the age of heroes had more or less ended. Like Peter Parker of Earth-616, Miguel was brilliant. As a result of his brilliance, he was awarded a scholarship to Alchemax School For Gifted Youngsters. While there, he quickly befriended Xina Kwan. With her help, he was able to successfully defend himself from a well-known bully. That bully just so happened to be the son of Alchemax’s Vice President of Research and Development.

Fast forward into adulthood, and Miguel had become the project head of the genetics program at Alchemax. As the head, he oversaw numerous experiments and research. Of the research he oversaw, none would change his life quite like the one that included altering the genetic structure of animals. More specifically, he was responsible for studying Spider-Man of the heroic age.

Although he enjoyed what he was doing, he became disillusioned with the company after watching a test subject die. Now not willing to work for the company, he tried to quit. Unfortunately, rather than let him walk out, the Vice President tricked him into taking a drug called Rapture.

For reference, Rapture is a drug that is only produced by Alchemax and is highly addictive.

Remembering that he had input his own genetic code as a “pure” code, he broke into the company and attempted to use the machinery to alter his genetic code back to how it was. This would’ve worked had his one time coworker Aaron Delgado not interfered. Aaron had become jealous of Miguel and as a result, tweaked the machine to alter Miguel’s genetic code. Instead of 100% human, Miguel was given half spider DNA and half human DNA. In an effort to conceal his identity, Miguel put on a suit that was made from UMF or Unstable Molecule Fabric. He chose this suit because he now possessed talons on both his hands and feet. Because the fabric was unstable, it didn’t tear while wearing it.

And that’s it. The origin of Spider-Man 2099.
