A Little History

The origin of Warpath, Marvel Comics is pretty straightforward.

Warpath first appeared inside the pages of New Mutants #16 in June of 1984. He was created by the duo of Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema.

In his origin story, James Proudstar was born on the Apache Reservation at Camp Verde in Arizona. His older brother, John was the mutant Thunderbird. Unfortunately, during a raid on Krakoa, John was killed. His death has a severe impact on James. As a result, James accepted an invitation to join Emma Frost’s Hellions.

The two quickly began to clash. While James was focused on his quest for revenge against the X-Men, Emma felt he was too young to battle the adult X-Men. Undeterred, James put on the costume of his fallen brother, kidnapped the X-Man Banshee, and used him to lure the team into a trap. Once the X-Men arrived, he had, for a moment, a chance to kill Professor Xavier. However, just as the opportunity came, he began doubting himself and questioning whether or not the X-Men were all that bad. That is, if his brother joined the team, could they really be so terrible? Although Professor Xavier offered him a spot on the New Mutants, he declined citing his loyalty to his Hellions friends as the reason. This, however, doesn’t mean that he continued to be a member of the group.

A short while later he returned to his tribe only to find that they had been slaughtered. After finding a mask of one of the Hellions, it was obvious that they were responsible for the massacre. This prompted James to join the New Mutants. Eventually, the New Mutants became the task force team known as the X-Force. Now a member of the X-Force, James took the moniker of Warpath and three rest, as they say, was history.

And that’s it. The origin of Warpath, Marvel Comics.
