Original ‘Blade’ Trilogy Writer Slams MCU Reboot Chaos: “It Should Not Be Complicated”

Marvel’s Blade reboot is going through one of the roughest developments in the studio’s history. It’s been nearly six years since the film was announced, and yet, there’s still no clear sign of when it will actually get made. What started out as an exciting return of the vampire-hunting superhero has turned into a frustrating waiting game.
Mahershala Ali was announced as the new Blade back in 2019, during San Diego Comic-Con. The casting got fans hyped, and Marvel seemed confident about the project.
But ever since then, it’s been nothing but delays, rewrites, and director changes. The movie has already gone through six different writers and is now looking for its third director. As of March 2025, Marvel has officially paused development.
David S. Goyer, the writer behind the original Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, recently shared his thoughts about the situation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Goyer didn’t hold back. “The promise of Blade is that it should have insane a– kicking, it should be pretty scary, might be R-rated, and it should not be complicated,” he said. “I think Blade is a relatively simple story, it’s not complicated.”
Goyer’s comments reflect how fans feel. Blade isn’t supposed to be a huge puzzle. It’s a guy who hunts vampires. Goyer’s version leaned into that simplicity and it worked, the original Blade trilogy, especially the first film from 1998, helped pave the way for modern superhero movies.
Blade’s reboot troubles go way back. After the original films ended in 2004, Marvel got the rights back in 2011 and started thinking about bringing the character into the MCU. Mahershala Ali, who had previously appeared in Marvel’s Luke Cage, approached the studio in 2019 about playing Blade.
He even made a brief voice cameo in Eternals in 2021. But that was the last real sign of progress.
Since then, the film has been shuffled around behind the scenes. Directors like Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were both attached at different points, but neither stuck. In mid-2024, Marvel brought in Eric Pearson to work on the latest version of the script, but just a few months later, they pulled Blade from their release calendar.
According to some reports, Ali is truly to Blame for the chaos as he wants Blade movie to be for him what Black Panther was for Chadwick Boseman.
At this point, fans are wondering if this movie will ever get made. For now, Marvel hasn’t announced a new timeline or director. Until something official comes out, Blade is stuck in the dark.
