Orlando Bloom’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Salary Story Is Going Viral Again, and the Numbers Are Still Hard to Believe
Some Hollywood stories never really lose their shock value no matter how many times they resurface, and Orlando Bloom’s account of his ‘Lord of the Rings‘ paycheck is exactly that kind of tale.
The trilogy remains one of the most celebrated achievements in film history, sweeping the Oscars with ‘The Return of the King’ and cementing an entire generation’s obsession with Middle-earth, yet the financial story behind one of its most beloved cast members tells a very different tale from what fans might assume.
Orlando Bloom landed the role of Legolas as his first major screen credit, and because he was a relative unknown at the time, his compensation reflected that status rather than the scale of the production itself. The gap between the trilogy’s massive box office success and what its supporting cast actually earned has become a recurring topic whenever Bloom discusses those years, and this latest resurfaced clip is no exception.
A resurfaced clip reignited that conversation this week, spotlighting Bloom’s appearance on The Howard Stern Show where he revealed he made just 175,000 dollars total for all three Lord of the Rings films combined. Bloom explained the winding path that led him there, saying he auditioned many times, originally for the role of Faramir, before casting agent Roz Hubbard brought him back specifically to test for Legolas instead.
Bloom described shooting the trilogy for 18 months in New Zealand, with additional reshoots stretched out over the following months, calling the entire experience awesome and describing the sense of camaraderie built through dinners and weekend drinks with the cast. That warmth toward the production stood in sharp contrast to the number Stern reacted to with visible disbelief once Bloom revealed it.
Stern pointed out that Bloom probably did not get to participate in the trilogy’s massive backend earnings since he was signed when he was essentially unknown, a comment Bloom did not dispute. Bloom responded simply that he got nothing, just the 175,000 dollars, before calling the experience the greatest gift of his life and joking that he would do it again for half the money.

Broken down across the three films, that salary works out to roughly 58,000 dollars per movie, a strikingly modest figure for a franchise that would go on to gross nearly 3 billion dollars worldwide. Bloom’s fortunes did improve considerably when he returned to the role for The Hobbit trilogy nearly a decade later, reportedly earning around 1 million dollars for reprising Legolas in that follow-up series.
The disparity between Bloom’s original paycheck and the trilogy’s ongoing merchandise value has become something of a running joke among fans, with props like Aragorn’s sword Andúril selling at auction for 437,000 dollars, well above what Bloom made for the entire trilogy. Despite the underwhelming numbers, the role launched Bloom into major franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean, Kingdom of Heaven, and Troy, helping build the career that has since given him a reported net worth of 40 million dollars.
How do you feel about Orlando Bloom earning only $175,000 for the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy?
Bloom’s willingness to laugh off the number rather than express bitterness has always been part of what makes the story resonate with fans each time it resurfaces. Nearly a quarter century after Legolas first appeared on screen, it seems the internet still can’t quite get over just how little the trilogy actually paid one of its most iconic stars.
