Paramount+ Drops Surprise “Among Us” Animated Series in Sudden Shadowdrop Release
The long-awaited animated adaptation of “Among Us” has officially been released, and it arrived without any prior announcement. The series is now streaming exclusively on Paramount+, marking a surprise debut that mirrors the game’s own theme of hidden identity and sudden betrayal.
The show is based on the globally popular video game “Among Us,” created by Innersloth. The original game places players aboard a spaceship where most crew members complete tasks, but one or more players secretly act as impostors trying to sabotage the mission and eliminate others. The core idea revolves around trust, deception, and survival, and the animated series adapts that same concept into a narrative format.
The official description explains the core premise clearly. As stated in the series synopsis, “Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.” The Paramount+ listing adds another framing, noting, “On a routine mission in space, teamwork is essential – until an Impostor turns every task into a game of suspicion and sabotage.”
The series was developed by Owen Dennis, who is best known for creating “Infinity Train.” The animation is handled by Titmouse, a studio with experience on adult and sci-fi animated projects such as “Big Mouth” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” Several executive producers are attached to the project, including Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina from Titmouse. On the creative side, Owen Dennis is joined by Innersloth co-founders Forest Willard and Marcus Bromander, along with Carl Neisser.
The voice cast features a large ensemble of well-known actors, each portraying members of the spaceship crew known as the Skeld. The lineup includes Randall Park as Red, the ship’s captain, and Patton Oswalt as White, a wealthy contest winner. Other cast members include Ashley Johnson as Purple, the head of security; Dan Stevens as Blue, the ship’s doctor; Debra Wilson as Yellow, a cook; Elijah Wood as Green, an intern; Kimiko Glenn as Cyan, a gemologist; Liv Hewson as Black, a geologist; Phil LaMarr as Brown, also a cook; Wayne Knight as Lime, the ship’s engineer; and Yvette Nicole Brown as Orange, who serves as head of human resources.
The series takes the simple game mechanics of “Among Us” and expands them into a structured story environment, focusing on paranoia, investigation, and survival in a confined space. The setting remains the spaceship Skeld, maintaining the same sci-fi atmosphere that made the game popular with millions of players worldwide.
With no advance promotion before release, the “shadowdrop” strategy has generated immediate attention online. Fans of the game have been reacting to the surprise launch and the high-profile voice cast, as well as the adaptation’s approach to turning a social deduction game into a serialized animated story.
As the series is newly released, more details about episode structure, reception, and future seasons are expected to emerge as viewers begin streaming it on Paramount+.
