Patrick Stewart Shares Which Role He Wants Fans To Remember
Patrick Stewart is best known for playing strong and serious characters, but the actor has never wanted to be boxed in. While fans still love his long friendship with Ian McKellen, Stewart has often said that his real passion is trying new things and surprising his audience.
During a conversation at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, Stewart spoke openly about his career while promoting the film Green Room. According to that discussion, he reflected on how different roles shaped his path and how one unexpected character might matter more to him than all the rest.
That conversation led back to Blunt Talk, the comedy series created by Seth MacFarlane. Stewart explained that his time playing Captain Jean Luc Picard played a role in how MacFarlane viewed him. After a reunion event where the two met again, MacFarlane became convinced that Stewart’s comedic side deserved more attention. This story comes from Stewart’s own remarks during the festival talk.
MacFarlane had already cast Stewart as Director Bullock on American Dad, but he wanted to push things further. He developed Blunt Talk with Stewart in mind and placed him in the lead role. In the series, Stewart played Walter Blunt, a loud and reckless TV host who believed he was helping the world by saying exactly what was on his mind.
Walter Blunt was nothing like Picard or Professor X. The character was rude, messy, and often out of control. Stewart has said this was exactly why the role mattered to him. He enjoyed stepping away from noble heroes and leaning into something unpredictable and uncomfortable.
In that same Toronto Film Festival discussion, Stewart admitted he would be happy if Walter Blunt became his legacy. He said he would not mind at all if younger viewers remembered him most for that role. He added that it would be “a fine way to finish things”, showing how much the character meant to him creatively.
This outlook shows how Stewart sees his career. Even though he is a major figure in Star Trek and X-Men, he values growth more than image. For him, legacy is about curiosity and risk, not just fame.
Stewart remains active as he moves into 2026. According to industry announcements, he is part of the upcoming Amazon Prime series Bait, created by Riz Ahmed. Details about his role have been kept quiet, but it has been described as unexpected and very different from what fans might expect.
He is also set to return to the Marvel universe in Avengers Doomsday, scheduled for release in December. The film will reunite him with Ian McKellen as Professor X and Magneto, facing off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Studio announcements say this reunion is one of the most anticipated moments in the franchise.
