Mamdani announced his candidacy for mayor in October 2024, focusing his campaign on making New York City more affordable. “What I will bring to this race is an explicit and relentless focus to the number one issue of importance to New York City voters. They can’t afford their rent. They can’t afford their childcare. They can’t afford transit. They can’t afford their groceries,” Mamdani told The Guardian.

Despite being relatively unknown at the start, Mamdani quickly gained traction, notably defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary with 56 percent of the vote.

NPR called the win an “astonishing upset” and suggested it could signal a shift in national politics, dubbing it “the Democrats’ Tea Party moment.” Mamdani has drawn large crowds and increased voter turnout in key neighborhoods, in part thanks to a strong social media campaign featuring videos on Instagram and TikTok.

Mamdani’s campaign has focused on several progressive policies, including freezing rents for tenants in rent-stabilized apartments, making public buses fare-free, and opening city-owned grocery stores in each borough.

His political style has earned him endorsements from prominent progressive figures such as U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, along with support from former Vice President Kamala Harris and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. However, some senior Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, were slower to back him.

Looking ahead, Mamdani is favored to win the general election in November 2025, where he will face Cuomo and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, among others. If elected, he would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor, first Indian American mayor, and the youngest mayor since Hugh J. Grant in 1889.
