Peter Bretter’s Breakup Saga Just Found a New Home on Apple’s Top 10
Some comedies just seem built to stick around, resurfacing on whatever platform picks them up long after their theatrical run has faded from memory. The list currently features ‘Mayday’ at the top spot alongside war epics like ‘Troy’ and ‘Master and Commander’, but tucked further down is a title that proves raunchy 2000s comedy still has an audience hungry for a rewatch.
Rounding out the chart at number ten with no change in position after nine days is ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’, the 2008 breakup comedy that has become one of the more enduring entries in the Judd Apatow produced comedy boom of that era.
The film follows Peter Bretter, played by Jason Segel, whose world falls apart when his television star girlfriend Sarah Marshall, played by Kristen Bell, dumps him for a self absorbed rock star. His best friend convinces him to escape to Hawaii, only for Peter to discover that Sarah and her new boyfriend happen to be staying at the exact same resort, setting off an awkward and increasingly funny vacation.
Directed by Nicholas Stoller, the film also stars Mila Kunis as a hotel employee who catches Peter’s attention amid the chaos, along with Russell Brand as the vain rock star whose casting was widely praised by critics. Reviewers responded well to the mix of raunchy humor and genuine emotional beats, noting that the film found a sharp balance between crude comedy and something a bit more heartfelt underneath it.
Nearly two decades removed from its original release, the movie’s reputation has only grown, with many now considering it one of the standout romantic comedies of its era thanks to its strong performances and quotable script.
