Peter Cullen, the Legendary Voice of Optimus Prime, Has Died at 85

For four decades, one voice defined heroism, sacrifice, and leadership for an entire generation of animation and blockbuster fans. That voice belonged to a single performer whose commitment to a single character became one of the most enduring relationships in entertainment history.

Peter Cullen built a six-decade career across voice animation, lending his talents to everything from Eeyore in Disney’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ franchise to King Kong in the 1976 remake and the eerie vocal effects of the creature in 1987’s ‘Predator.’ Yet no role came to define him quite like the one he first took on in 1984, when he stepped into the role of Optimus Prime for the original animated ‘Transformers’ series.

That connection to the character has now come to an end. Cullen has died at 85, passing away Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, according to his agent Kevin Motley, who confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cullen’s family shared a statement following his passing, saying he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones and asking fans to honor his legacy through compassion and community service. They closed the statement with a phrase closely associated with the character he brought to life for so many years, urging people to always remember to “be strong enough to be gentle.”

Cullen originated the role of Optimus Prime in the syndicated 1984 animated series and reprised it for 1986’s ‘Transformers: The Movie,’ a film whose emotional impact on young audiences reportedly caught even the studio off guard following the character’s controversial on-screen death. He would go on to return to the role decades later for Michael Bay’s live-action film franchise, beginning with the 2007 film starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Josh Duhamel, cementing his voice as the definitive sound of the Autobot leader across multiple generations of fans.

Beyond Optimus Prime, Cullen’s decades-long résumé included voicing Monterey Jack in ‘Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,’ the villainous K.A.R.R. on ‘Knight Rider,’ and dozens of appearances as Eeyore across various Winnie the Pooh projects. His final performance as Optimus Prime reportedly came in 2024, when he appeared on an episode of Fox’s ‘The Masked Singer.’

Tributes from the industry poured in following news of his death. Producer Don Murphy recalled the push to bring Cullen back for the live-action films specifically because of his connection to the original animated series, describing him as incredible and calling his body of work the stuff of legend. ‘Transformers: War for Cybertron’ showrunner FJ DeSanto echoed that sentiment, saying no one defined the franchise more than Cullen himself and crediting him with uniting multiple generations of fans in their love for both Optimus Prime and Cullen as a person.

Cullen previously reflected on the character’s cultural impact in comments to The Hollywood Reporter, describing the Transformers phenomenon as mind-shaking and expressing gratitude for having been part of something that stood out so significantly in his career. He is survived by his four children, including stunt performer and coordinator Clay Cullen.

For millions of fans who grew up with his voice guiding the Autobots through decades of animated series, films, and video games, Cullen’s passing marks the end of an era that shaped how audiences understood heroism on screen.
