Pierce Brosnan Talks 007 Comeback Rumors in Villeneuve’s Bond Reboot
Pierce Brosnan isn’t done with James Bond just yet, or at least, he’s open to one more mission. The actor, who played 007 through four blockbuster films from GoldenEye to Die Another Day, said in a recent interview that he’d happily return to the role if filmmaker Denis Villeneuve ever asked him.
Now 72, Brosnan laughed off the idea of an aging Bond but didn’t completely rule it out. “I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond,” he said.
“But if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. Why not? It’s great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?”
Brosnan mentioned that he and his wife, Keely Shaye Brosnan, often talk about the ongoing speculation around who will play the next James Bond. “My wife Keely and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who’s going to be the next James Bond,” he said. “There are many great candidates out there, and I’m sure they’re going to make it a spectacle of delight.”
The comments come as talk heats up around Bond 26, the next film in the long-running spy franchise.
The movie will mark a full reboot of the series, the first since Casino Royale in 2006. Amazon, which took over production from EON Productions earlier this year, is now developing the project through Heyman Films and Pascal Pictures, with David Heyman and Amy Pascal overseeing.
In June, it was confirmed that Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune and Sicario, will direct and executive produce the movie. Tanya Lapointe will also serve as an executive producer, and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has signed on to write the script.
The reboot is expected to bring a fresh tone and possibly a new actor to take over the role of 007. But Brosnan’s willingness to return, even briefly, adds an interesting twist for fans who still see him as one of the most iconic Bonds of all time.
