Popular Netflix Shows Canceled and Others Get Season Renewals
Netflix is shaking up its lineup just six weeks into the year, with a mix of cancellations and renewals making waves among fans. The streaming giant has axed three shows and left another lifestyle series hanging in uncertainty, while confirming that several hits will return for new seasons.
One of the most notable cancellations came on February 13, when the animated sci-fi series Terminator Zero was officially canceled after just one season. The show had earned praise from critics and fans alike, but according to creator Mattson Tomlin, it didn’t draw enough viewers to justify continuing. I would’ve loved to tell the full multi-season story, but I’m proud of what the first season accomplished, Tomlin said.
Western fans also faced disappointment earlier in the year. On January 21, Netflix confirmed that The Abandons would not return for a second season. The drama starred Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson and followed two rival families fighting over land in the 1850s. Despite strong performances and creator Kurt Sutter’s pedigree, the show struggled to find a large audience.
That same day, The Vince Staples Show was also canceled after two seasons, ending the rapper’s surreal, satirical journey into his haunted past. Meanwhile, the lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, produced by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, remains in limbo. Industry insiders suggest it may conclude after its current season as the Duchess shifts focus to other projects.
On the brighter side, several fan favorites are confirmed to return. Black Mirror’s eighth season is in development, with creator Charlie Brooker joking that it will come back just as reality catches up. Emily in Paris will return for a sixth season following a successful fifth-season premiere in Rome, and the figure skating drama Finding Her Edge has been greenlit for a second season.
Actors from canceled projects are already moving on to new opportunities. Mattson Tomlin is working on The Batman Part II screenplay, Lena Headey is set to star in the thriller Svalbard, and Gillian Anderson recently finished a Netflix limited series called The Salt Path. Vince Staples is focusing on his music career with a major North American tour planned for the summer.
Two long-running Netflix favorites are also reaching their conclusions this year. Outer Banks will end with its fifth season, expected later in 2026, and Queer Eye released its tenth and final season in January, taking the Fab Five to Washington, D.C., for their last “make-better” mission.
With so many changes already happening early in the year, Netflix subscribers are advised to stay alert for more updates. The streaming service is proving that even beloved shows aren’t guaranteed a long run, while fan favorites continue to secure new seasons.
