‘Practical Magic 2’ New Look Confirms the Owens Sisters Are Ready to Break Their Curse

Nearly three decades after two witches captivated audiences with midnight margaritas and an unfortunate curse, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are stepping back into the world that first made them cult favorites. The original 1998 film may have struggled with critics and box office at the time, but it’s since become the kind of beloved cult classic that only grows more cherished with age.

That enduring affection has finally paid off with a proper sequel, one that’s been building anticipation since Warner Bros. first confirmed the project was in development back in June 2024. What started with a cryptic incantation-style teaser has since evolved into a full marketing rollout as the film’s release date draws closer.

The latest piece of that campaign arrived with a new poster showing Bullock and Kidman standing back to back as their characters Sally and Gillian Owens, confirming the film’s theatrical release for September 10. Directed by Susanne Bier, the sequel is based on a later installment of Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic book series, continuing the story of the Owens family’s generations-long entanglement with witchcraft and love curses.

The returning cast reads like a genuine reunion of the original’s key players. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are both back as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, joining Bullock and Kidman in reprising the roles that first defined the franchise nearly 30 years ago.

New additions to the ensemble include Joey King and Maisie Williams playing Sally’s daughters, alongside Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod rounding out the expanded cast. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the screenplay for the original film, returns to pen the sequel as well, giving the follow-up a direct creative link back to the story’s earliest roots.

Bullock and Kidman have both spoken warmly about their history with the character over the years, even amid the original’s rocky critical reception. Speaking to Rolling Stone about the beloved midnight margaritas scene, Bullock said, “‘Hollywood’ made the movie and fully leaned into it. They may have regretted it once we got eviscerated, but they were brave enough to make it back then, so for that I am so grateful,” while Kidman added, “I just remember loving the film. I won’t be pulled off it if I love it. And I love it!”

The sequel’s marketing has leaned heavily into that same tone of moonlit mischief and ancestral magic that defined the original, with early trailer footage teasing a dark curse threatening to unravel the Owens family once and for all. That framing suggests the follow-up will dig deeper into the family’s magical lineage rather than simply retreading familiar ground.

Bullock, Kidman, and returning original producer Denise Di Novi are all producing the sequel together, giving the project a level of creative continuity that fans of the first film should find reassuring. With the September 10 release date now locked in and fresh promotional material rolling out, the wait for the Owens sisters’ return is finally entering its final stretch.
