Producer Reveals ‘The Sims’ Movie Takes Cues from ‘Barbie’ and ‘Lego Movie’
A live-action The Sims movie is finally moving forward after years of delays and cancellations. The project is being produced by LuckyChap Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment, with Kate Herron directing and co-writing alongside Briony Redman.
EA confirmed in September 2024 that the film will also be produced in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios.
The journey to this film has been long. Back in 2007, 20th Century Fox bought the rights to The Sims and planned a movie written by Brian Lynch and produced by John Davis. However, the project stalled for years, and when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, the original plans were canceled along with several other video game adaptations.
Producer Roy Lee spoke with The Direct while promoting his new movie The Long Walk. He described the upcoming Sims film as “unique” and compared it to the curiosity fans had before seeing The Lego Movie, another film he produced. “It’s one of these things where I can’t talk about it much, because it’s going to be unique. And it’s a sort of like, people were wondering, ‘What could a ‘LEGO Movie’ be?’ until you saw it,” Lee said.
Lee also highlighted Margot Robbie’s involvement as a producer through LuckyChap Entertainment, drawing comparisons to her hit movie Barbie. “Somewhere in between both ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Barbie’ is where ‘The Sims’ movie will be,” he explained. “And I’m producing with Margot Robbie. And [audiences] were probably wondering, ‘What could a ‘Barbie’ movie be?’”
Kate Gorman, EA’s vice president and general manager of The Sims, added that the team hopes the movie will have a big impact, citing Barbie (2023) as an inspiration. She said they want to “make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie.”
The Sims movie arrives at a time when video game adaptations are gaining traction in theaters. Minecraft has already become one of the biggest films of 2025, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is expected to follow, bringing back several key characters from the game. While Barbie and LEGO might have bigger name recognition, the producers believe The Sims can find its own success with creativity, humor, and fan-favorite moments.
