Quentin Tarantino Breaks Down What Went Wrong With the Matrix Sequels

Quentin Tarantino has never been shy about sharing his opinions on movies, especially when it comes to films that left a lasting impression on him. The director first made waves in Hollywood with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, but it was Pulp Fiction in 1994 that fully cemented his place in film history. The movie won the Palme d’Or and earned seven Oscar nominations.

Over the years, Tarantino built a massive fanbase with films like Kill Bill and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His style, known for sharp dialogue and carefully chosen music, has made him one of the most recognizable filmmakers of his time. He has also worked closely with stars such as Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie throughout his career.

Because of his deep love of cinema, fans often ask Tarantino which movies he personally values the most. In a 2009 interview with Sky Movies, he shared a list of his favorite films released since he began directing. At the top of that list was the Japanese cult film Battle Royale.

On that same list was The Matrix, the 1999 science fiction hit from the Wachowskis. Tarantino said he saw the movie on opening night and was immediately blown away by it. At one point, he even considered it one of the greatest films ever made.

However, his feelings changed after the release of the sequels. In the interview, Tarantino explained that the second and third films altered how he viewed the story. He said the follow-ups damaged the larger world of the franchise and made it harder for him to fully enjoy the original movie the way he once did.

He shared that before the sequels, The Matrix would have ranked just behind Battle Royale on his all-time favorites list. After The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were released in 2003, that changed. According to Tarantino, the added storylines took away from the mystery and strength of the original film.

Even so, he made it clear that the sequels did not fully erase the impact of the first movie. He noted that The Matrix still holds a place in his top twenty favorite films, even if it no longer sits near the top.

While Tarantino has slowed down on directing in recent years, he has stayed busy behind the scenes. Industry reports say he recently finished writing The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film is being directed by David Fincher and is expected to be released on Netflix in 2026.

The project reportedly has a $200 million budget and will bring back Brad Pitt in his Oscar-winning role. Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan are also set to appear, according to casting announcements.

As for his final film, Tarantino has said he is taking his time. He previously walked away from a project called The Movie Critic and continues to search for a story that feels right to end his career.
