Keeping people focused on a movie set is not easy, especially during long night shoots. Quentin Tarantino, however, has his own strange way of dealing with crew members who fall asleep while cameras are rolling.

The story came out during an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s late-night show. Actress Uma Thurman, who worked closely with Tarantino on several films, shared the details while talking with O’Brien in front of a live audience.

According to Thurman, Tarantino did not yell or hand out warnings. Instead, he used a very unusual prop to embarrass anyone caught sleeping. He had a weapon of choice. There was a large d***o, and we’re talking something like this, Thurman said, stretching her arm to show the size. I don’t know who this is made for.

She explained that whenever someone on set started snoring, the object would suddenly appear right next to their face. Whenever snores would be found in various corners of the set, it would be brought out like Jaws, Thurman said. And then sort of presented at some ungodly horrific angle next to the face of the offending sleeper.

Thurman made it clear that she was not comfortable with the method. She said photos were taken and posted on what she described as a wall of shame. I was quite troubled by it. I found it quite unkind, she said. There would be photographs taken, and there was a wall of shame.

Tarantino later confirmed the story himself during his own conversation with Conan O’Brien. He explained that the idea came from frustration during overnight shoots when people naturally get tired.

It always bugged me when you shoot at night and see a crew member or an actor sleeping, Tarantino said. So I came up with something where it wouldn’t bug me, and if it did happen, I’m now happy about it.

He also revealed that the prop had a name and had been part of his sets for years.

I introduced a new crew member to the set around Jackie Brown, called Big Jerry, Tarantino said. Big Jerry is a big purple d***o that’s about this long. It’s the second biggest d***o in the store. According to Tarantino, when someone fell asleep, the crew would quietly move in with the prop and place it as close to the sleeper’s face as possible.

As of 2026, Uma Thurman continues to stay busy. She recently wrapped work on Red, White & Royal Wedding for Prime Video, where she returns as President Ellen Claremont. She has also appeared in Dexter: Resurrection and The Old Guard 2, keeping her presence strong in both film and television.

Tarantino, meanwhile, is still surrounded by questions about his final movie. After shelving The Movie Critic, he is now working on a new project titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The film is connected to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

What do you think, was this just a joke to keep people awake, or did it go too far?
