‘Ramayana’ Release Date is Set, Here’s Everything We Know About the Cast and Plot

Indian cinema has been building toward this moment for years, ever since word first spread that one of the most ambitious mythological epics ever attempted was quietly taking shape behind the scenes. Between its scale, its star power, and its reported budget, the project has carried an almost mythic weight of its own long before a single frame reached audiences.

That anticipation has only grown louder as the film’s promotional rollout has picked up steam throughout the year, with early trailers already teasing a visual scope rarely seen in Indian filmmaking. Now, the wait for an actual release date is finally over.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has confirmed that ‘Ramayana‘ will hit theaters globally on November 6, timing the release to coincide with Diwali. The two-part adaptation marks one of the most significant Indian film events in recent memory, and the newly announced date gives fans a concrete moment to circle on their calendars.

‘Ramayana’ stars Ranbir Kapoor as the exiled prince Rama, Sai Pallavi as his consort Sita, and Yash as the demon king Ravana. The story follows Rama and Sita through exile into catastrophe, as Sita’s abduction at Ravana’s hands sets in motion a sweeping war between righteousness and evil that stretches across three worlds.

Director Nitesh Tiwari, whose ‘Dangal’ remains the highest-grossing Indian film ever made, helms the project from a screenplay by Shridhar Raghavan. Speaking about why he chose Kapoor to lead the film, Tiwari explained there was nobody better suited to portray the character and manage the expectations of a billion people, according to NDTV.

Designed with global audiences in mind, the film will release in multiple languages, including English, and both parts were filmed for IMAX. That international ambition lines up with the project’s broader goal of presenting the ancient saga as, in producer Namit Malhotra’s words, an authentic and visually stunning adaptation built to honor its cultural roots while reaching viewers far beyond India.

The film’s scale extends well beyond its cast. Oscar winners Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman have joined forces to compose the score, marking Zimmer’s first venture into Indian cinema, while Terry Notary and Guy Norris handle the film’s action choreography.

Visual effects are being handled by DNEG, the eight-time Oscar-winning studio behind ‘Dune,’ ‘Interstellar,’ and ‘Inception,’ giving ‘Ramayana’ access to some of the same effects talent responsible for recent Hollywood blockbusters. Production design comes courtesy of Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal, rounding out a creative team assembled from across the global film industry.

A trailer released earlier this summer offered fans their first extended look at the film’s high-scale visual effects, mythological weaponry, and massive battle sequences, hinting at Rama’s vow to defeat Ravana and rescue Sita. That footage helped cement expectations that ‘Ramayana’ is aiming for a genuinely unprecedented cinematic spectacle rather than a modest retelling of the source material.

While November 6 marks the debut of Part 1, the story doesn’t end there. The project was always conceived as a two-part event, with Part 2 expected to follow roughly a year later as the saga continues toward its dramatic conclusion.

In India, distribution for the film will be handled by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, adding another major industry name to an already stacked list of collaborators behind the scenes. With a release date now locked in and momentum building steadily, ‘Ramayana’ looks positioned to be one of the defining cinematic events of the year.
