‘Reacher’ Breakout Agnez Mo Wants to Play Psylocke in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot

Casting campaigns have become almost as much a part of the modern superhero movie cycle as the films themselves, with actors increasingly willing to publicly lobby for roles they’d love to play. Few franchises have generated as much of that behind-the-scenes campaigning lately as Marvel’s long-awaited “X-Men” reboot.

That trend continued this weekend when a rising star fresh off her breakout television role decided to throw her name into the ring for one of the X-Men’s most iconic characters. Indonesian singer and actress Agnez Mo has spent the past few weeks earning attention for her performance as Lila Hoth in Season 4 of Amazon Prime Video’s “Reacher,” marking her first major English-language project.

Riding that momentum, Mo responded enthusiastically to a fan-cast post suggesting she take on the role of Psylocke in Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” film. “I’m just gonna put it out to the universe… Psylocke,” Mo wrote in response to the fan-cast post, tagging both Marvel Studios and Marvel’s official account directly.

Psylocke, whose real name is Betsy Braddock, has been portrayed on screen three times previously, by Mei Melançon in “X-Men: The Last Stand,” Olivia Munn in “X-Men: Apocalypse” and Aisha Hussein in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Munn’s version received the most screen time and was widely considered the most comic-accurate portrayal, though fans of the psychic mutant warrior have continued pushing for a more prominent role in Marvel’s rebooted mutant saga.

Mo’s rapid rise in Hollywood circles has been fueled almost entirely by her work as Lila Hoth opposite Alan Ritchson in “Reacher.” Despite the role marking her first major international, English-language project, fans and critics alike have praised her performance, with many crediting the character with a level of depth and intensity that helped elevate what could have easily been a forgettable supporting role.

That reception has clearly caught the attention of comic book fans eager to see fresh faces step into Marvel’s mutant universe. Mo isn’t the only name currently circulating in connection with Psylocke, but her enthusiastic, direct response to the fan campaign has made her one of the more visible contenders in the eyes of online fandom, even without any official confirmation from Marvel Studios.

Psylocke isn’t currently expected to appear in the first installment of Marvel’s rebooted “X-Men” film, though multiple X-related projects across film and television reportedly remain in development. That timeline leaves plenty of room for speculation about when, and through which project, the character might eventually make her MCU debut.

Mo’s public interest fits into a much larger pattern surrounding the “X-Men” reboot’s casting process. Numerous actors have openly lobbied for specific roles in recent months, including Keke Palmer repeatedly expressing interest in playing Rogue and Cynthia Erivo calling Storm her dream role.

So far, the roles officially confirmed at D23 include Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm and Sadie Sink reprising her “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” role as Jean Grey. Director Jake Schreier has continued taking meetings with additional actors expressing interest, suggesting the film’s full roster is still very much taking shape behind the scenes.

With several more major roles, including Wolverine, Beast and Magneto, still unconfirmed, it remains entirely possible that Mo’s public appeal could eventually lead to real consideration for the part, even if nothing has been officially decided. For now, her enthusiastic response stands as the latest example of just how openly actors are campaigning for a chance to join Marvel’s next major superhero ensemble.
