‘Ready or Not’ Star Elijah Wood Breaks Cannes Red Carpet Rule and Gets Everyone Talking
Elijah Wood caused a small stir at the Cannes Film Festival after appearing to break one of the event’s strict red carpet rules.
The actor was seen taking a selfie with a group of guests while attending the festival, even though selfies are banned on the official Cannes red carpet. The moment happened while he was at the festival to present an honorary Palme d’Or to director Peter Jackson, known for “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
The selfie rule has been in place since 2018 and was created to stop overcrowding and keep guest movement smooth during arrivals. The idea originally started in 2015, when festival director Thierry Frémaux commented on selfies, saying, “You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie.” The rule later became official and is now enforced by festival security.
Despite the ban, Wood was filmed briefly posing for a selfie with other attendees before continuing on his way. There were no reports of security stepping in or issuing any warning during the incident.
Elijah Wood was at Cannes mainly to honor filmmaker Peter Jackson, presenting him with a special award during the event. In his speech, Wood praised Jackson’s influence on cinema and his global impact as a director.
He said, “You gave the world something it had never seen before, and nothing was ever the same again,” adding, “You helped build a whole new film culture on the other side of the world.”
The moment of the selfie quickly drew attention online because Cannes is known for its strict red carpet etiquette. However, reports suggest there were no consequences for Wood, and he continued with the rest of his appearance as planned.
The Cannes Film Festival has been slowly adapting to modern social media culture in some areas, even while keeping certain traditional rules in place. While selfies remain banned on the red carpet, the festival has allowed some controlled use of new technology, including interviews filmed with wearable devices.
Still, the rules are taken seriously, and security is usually present to enforce them when needed. In this case, however, the incident appears to have been light and informal rather than a major violation.
Wood’s appearance ultimately remained focused on the tribute to Peter Jackson, but the brief selfie moment ended up becoming one of the more talked-about small incidents of the festival day.
