Rebecca Gayheart Dane Opens Up About Eric Dane’s Final AI Voice Project
The entertainment world is still mourning Eric Dane, the actor best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, who passed away on February 19 at the age of 53. Dane had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, since his diagnosis in 2025.
In the final weeks of his life, he worked with the AI company ElevenLabs on a voice restoration project, aiming to preserve his voice for his daughters, 16-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia.
His widow, Rebecca Gayheart Dane, told reporters the experience was emotional for the family. “He was really excited about it, because he was losing his voice, and it was becoming more difficult for him to communicate every day,” she said.
When they first heard the synthesized version of his voice, she recalled it moved everyone to tears. “They were like, that’s not a recording. That’s your voice. That’s you. So it was spot on,” she added, referring to their daughters’ reactions.
ElevenLabs has announced that it will offer the voice restoration technology for free to people with similar neurological conditions. The company hopes to help up to a million people reconnect with loved ones who have lost the ability to speak.
Gayheart Dane said she plans to advocate for the initiative in Eric’s honor. “He really understood how meaningful having the voice was,” she explained. Dane became a household name playing Dr. Mark Sloan, or “McSteamy,” on ABC’s long-running Grey’s Anatomy.
He later reinvented himself with a darker, complex role as Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, proving his range as an actor. After his ALS diagnosis, Dane became an advocate for research and awareness, sharing his personal journey with fans and the public.
Even in his final months, Dane remained busy professionally. He will appear in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, set to premiere on HBO on April 12. He also completed filming for the thriller Family Secrets, which is in post-production.
Additionally, a memoir about his life and experiences with ALS, titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, is set to be published by Maria Shriver’s imprint, The Open Field. Eric Dane’s legacy as an actor, advocate, and father continues to inspire fans and colleagues alike.
