Rebecca Romijn Says Playing Mystique in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Finally Felt Like Hers

Rebecca Romijn has spent more than two decades as one of the defining faces of the X-Men franchise, even when audiences never actually saw her face at all. Her transformation into the blue-skinned shapeshifter Mystique became a signature part of the early 2000s superhero boom, long before crossovers between studios felt like a realistic possibility.

Now, with Marvel folding the Fox-era mutants into its ever-expanding cinematic universe, Romijn is stepping back into that role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ joining former co-stars like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and Alan Cumming in the massive ensemble. The reunion has already generated plenty of excitement among longtime X-Men fans eager to see these characters share the screen with Marvel’s larger roster.

That excitement grew further after Romijn opened up about how different this particular return actually felt for her. Speaking with Inverse, the actress explained that returning as Mystique this time gave her a sense of control over the character that she never had during her original run in the franchise. She described the offer as something she was not expecting at all, adding that stepping back in with that ownership over Raven Darkholme this time around was delightful.

Romijn also revealed that the character’s makeup process has shifted since her early appearances in the franchise. She noted that the transformation is now described as a slightly different take on the character, a detail that lines up with a first trailer glimpse showing her Mystique taking on the appearance of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova during an apparent confrontation.

That evolution is a significant shift from how demanding the process once was. In earlier interviews, Romijn has described the original Mystique makeup as taking roughly nine hours to apply, requiring her to arrive at midnight in order to be camera-ready by nine in the morning. She has said the process left her working close to 24 hours straight before needing an equal amount of recovery time, since the prosthetics covered around 75 percent of her body and left no room for her skin to breathe during physically demanding scenes.

Romijn last played the character on screen in 2006, before Jennifer Lawrence took over the role for the prequel trilogy that ran through the following decade. Her original portrayal across the first three X-Men films remains a fan favorite, often cited as one of the more physically committed performances of that era of superhero filmmaking.

Her return arrives as part of a sprawling cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which brings together heroes from multiple corners of Marvel’s cinematic history. The film’s ensemble reportedly includes Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Winston Duke, Chris Hemsworth, and Kelsey Grammer, alongside the returning X-Men cast.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is positioned as the beginning of the final chapter in Marvel’s ongoing Multiverse Saga, bringing beloved heroes from separate cinematic universes into direct collision. The scale of the production reportedly carries a budget exceeding $400,000,000, a striking contrast to the roughly $75,000,000 it took to produce the very first ‘X-Men’ film back in 2000.

For Romijn, the chance to revisit Mystique on this scale appears to represent a kind of full-circle moment, one that finally lets her shape the character on her own terms after years of stepping into someone else’s vision for Raven. With the film’s release drawing closer, fans will soon get to see exactly how that renewed ownership translates to the screen.
